Empowerment Project. I love their work, I'm on their board and I find
the artwork inspiring.
Also, check out JOYISM and The Saartje Project. I have heard great
things about each one, and I'm looking forward to checking out the
work myself.

YWDEP enrolls young women ages 13-18 from DC and surrounding areas
into its Summer Enrichment Program, where they literally become
artists. Through an 8-week process working one-on-one and in small
groups with talented, professional DC artists, the young women develop
their drumming, writing, speaking, singing and performance skills. In
addition, they form bonds across racial and cultural barriers, develop
self-esteem, self-awareness and leadership skills, and fully develop
their inner artist. At the end of the summer, they perform a
collection of rhythm, songs, poems, dances and more for local
audiences who leave awe-inspired by their wisdom, talent and courage.

Binahkaye Joy kicks off JOYISM! launch with interactive dance show
Friday May 1st! JOYISM! takes audiences on an dynamic, participatory
movement journey by diving into themes and issues that affect us all.
Binahkaye initiates a communal honoring of motherhood through danced
biographies in The Mother Project. She challenges everyone to
reconsider the travesty of Hurricane Katrina in a co-created movement
dialogue where dance takes the place of words in New Orleans! The
words of women who are incarcerated come alive in Lifelines on 57
through movement and audience participation. And of course, an
experience with Binahkaye would be incomplete without a danced
exploration of the mystical booty in Bootyism. Live music adds a brand
new dimension to JOYISM! with Manatho "Shumba" Masani on Mbira and
Eric Maring on Tabla. JOYISM! is an opportunity to embrace the dance
that belongs to all of us!
The JOYISM! show will be at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th
Street, SE Washington, DC 20003 in Eastern Market on Friday, May 1st.
Doors open at 7:30pm and the show begins at 8:00pm. Advance ticket
purchase is strongly recommended. Tickets are $15 and are available
online at

Homecoming: a Juried Artist Showcase
Saturday, May 2nd @ 8pm
Capitol Hill Arts Workshop
545 7th Street, SE
Washington, DC 20003
In May 2002, Saartjie (Sara) Baartman's remains were flown back to her
homeland, South Africa and laid to rest almost 200 years after she
left for Europe in search of a life void of violence. Tragically from
1810 – 1815 Saartjie was paraded around Europe under the show name
“Hottentot Venus”. Featured as an oddity and hypersexual African
woman, she was adorned in feathers, beads and placed in a cage on
display because of her large buttocks. When she died her body was
dissected and her remains were on display in a museum in Paris until
1974.
“HOMECOMING” is the first of a tradition started by The Saartjie
Project to commemorate the 7th anniversary of Saartjie’s return home
and raise the questions, “What does it mean to commemorate this day?”
and “How can we use our work as artists to heal and create dialogue?”
“HOMECOMING” will feature friends of The Saartjie Project - women and
girls boldly using their original art to heal and change communities.
Participants include the Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project,
Dee Stone, Mahoganee, LEA, Elen Awalom, Chaquis Maliq, Princess of
Controversy, Amber Robles – Gordon, Kameelah Rasheed, members of The
Saartjie Project and more! To purchase advance tickets, learn more

ABOUT THE SAARTJIE PROJECT
The Saartjie Project is a volunteer-run artist collective that has
garnered national and international attention for its boundary-
stretching stage presentations that addresses the complex issues
facing black women in society. The collective is named after Saartjie
Baartman. “HOMECOMING” is a benefit to raise funds for the collective
to participate in the 2009 Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
International Conference and sustain our work as we expand community
programming. This summer The Saartjie Project will be featured in the
Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, DC and the Push Push Theatre in
Atlanta.
