York City, Sulu DC emerged from a need for visibility and a supportive
community for AAPI artists in the greater Washington, D.C. area. It
was borne of a merging of the fabulous foursome, *Regie Cabico* (co-
founder of the Sulu Series in New York, Artistic Director of Sol y
Soul and spoken word pioneer), *Simone Jacobson* (poet, dancer and
Cipher Director at Words Beats & Life), Jenny C. Lares (spoken word
poet) and *Brian Wang* (co-chair of DC's Young and Powerful).

The Sulu Series is named after Sulu of Star Trek, the first Asian
American character to venture into the unknown galactic quadrant, and
a remote island in the Philippines.

DECEMBER 3-6, 11-12
Solo performer Sara Felder in Out of Sight
@Baltimore Theatre Project
45 West Preston Street
Baltimore, MD 21201

Out of Sight is radical solo circus theater about the art of seeing.
Felder tells the tale of a mother, nearly blind, and her adult lesbian
daughter as they try to bridge their many differences. Felder's work
brings circus tricks, shadow puppets and a Jewish queer sensibility to
questions of family loyalty and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and
allows us to explore the big questions of our lives, laughing along
the way as we recognize ourselves in her stories.

What is a Posada?
Las Posadas are a 9-day (December 16th to 24th) Catholic celebration,
that recount Mary and Joseph's search for a shelter in which to give
birth. In the same spirit as caroling, folks go to a different
neighbor's house on each of the 9 days, and sing to ask for shelter.
The neighbors open their homes and offer food and drinks, and the 9
days often end with more festivities.

And a Puppetry Posada?
Inspired by the community spirit of this celebration, our Puppet
Posada will be a more secular one-night version where, accompanied by
musicians, we travel to several different Mount Pleasant homes for
performances drawing from a mix of holiday and non-religious
traditions. At each house participants will be treated to snacks or
hot drinks and the evening will culminate in a party at the final
stop!

We'll have an exciting set of puppet and other shows for you,
including excerpts from a legendary Mt. Pleasant-based Hannukah show,
a yiddish folk tale, a cantastoria, and more!
So come on out in your warmest layers next month and join Mount
Pleasant community members to roam the neighborhood and party with us
puppeteers!

To find out more about Puppet Underground visit:

(All shows are family friendly. Unfortunately the houses we will be
visiting are not wheelchair accessible.)

SATURDAY JANUARY 16, 2010

United Workers Association presents

The First Annual Justice Theater Conference
10am-3pm

2640 Space/2640 St Paul Street
Baltimore, MD

A day of workshops, forums, discussions including Classlines, Bashi
Rose, NOMMO, Theater Action Group, Puppet Underground, and others.
Explore the intersection of theater and struggles for dignity and
justice through Theater of the Oppressed, the Battle of Stories
Framework, street theater, and puppet-making, as the United Workers
Association prepares for a community-wide participation play on OUR
HARBOR DAY.

UWA, an organizing group of day laborers, gained national attention in
2007 when they won their 3 year campaign for a living wage for workers
at Baltimore's baseball stadium, passed by the city council. Now they
are taking on human rights in Baltimore's Inner Harbor through
theater. Everyone is welcome for this day-long justice theater event.
