Can you give us an idea of what you want to do in this project and what you want to base it on?

Hello.

I got some ideas but I'm not sure if you or anyone would like to work on something like this.
Most of the work would be modifying existing Linux projects using OSX (technically not visually) as inspiration at places where possible.

I'd like to visually and functionally re-design Linux into something more Amiga-like. For start I'm going to need someone to help me with GoboHide tool and GoboLinux kernel patch.  And with AmiWM or (more likely) with forking and modifying XFCE or any other lightweight DE/WM that is closest to Workbench. Something small like Puppy or Slitaz would be used as a base.

Would you or anyone be interested to team-up?
It doesn't have to follow Linux standards and it doesn't need to be anything serious.
I would do graphics and design.

Damir

Developing something like that is beyond my skill range, however I have some questions for you.

1. Why Linux? Why not BSD? Why not DragonflyBSD? Dragonfly exists to introduce some Amiga-like concepts into BSD. Their lead developer is Matt Dillon, a long-time Amiga developer.

2. Do you intend this to just be a Linux distro that looks like Workbench, or an actual Amiga-like OS that is based on a un*x kernel(like OSX)?

3. Will you be using the X Window System to provide the desktop, or do you intend to implement a whole new one? If you are using X, how do you propose to implement Amiga screens? How will you handle Gadtools and MUI programs? Will they need to be reimplemented?

Thanks.

Fsckit.

Hi,

1. Linux have better driver support and most of the popular software is made for Linux so it takes some time before it gets ported to BSD. It can be any BSD, Haiku or Minix but I think that Linux just have more to offer to.

2. Yes, minimalistic Linux distro with WB clone on top.

3. I can't implement or develop anything. I'm an artist and somewhat designer. I would provide an iconset, wallpapers, logo... just to make project more unique and complete.

Like I already said, nothing big and nothing serious. 2-3 people hobby project. It can be a private project.

Damir

Fsckit,

Pardon the delay in my reply; new job, new responsibilities... To answer some of your questions:

1. On the "Why Linux?" front, the reason is purely
pragmatic...near-universal hardware/device/platform support...FAR more than
any of the BSDs provide. I am well aware of Matt Dillon's DragonflyBSD, but
DragonflyBSD is solely targeted at x86_64. The Linux kernel gives you access to a large collection of ARM platforms "for free"

2. No, there is no interest on my part of creating just another Linux
distro that looks like Workbench. That's not of any interest to me, nor do
I see it providing any value or compelling reason to use it.

3. The goal is to use Wayland, not Xorg. There may be some sort of MUI
compatibility layer, although this is not an immediate goal.
