Title: Sources of Epistemic Normativity
Abstract: When people violate epistemic norms, we may hold them epistemically accountable. This is in part why there is such a thing as epistemic normativity and not just epistemic value. But why would others owe it to us to comply with epistemic
norms? I argue, first, that value-based accounts of epistemic normativity, which appeal to the instrumental or intrinsic value of norm compliance or enforcement to individuals or communities, can’t provide a satisfying answer to this question. Ultimately this
is because accountability isn’t based on value but authority to make claims on others. Second, I argue that a kind of social constitutivist account of belief and epistemic agency does promise a satisfactory explanation, but relies on some controversial premises.
Reminder for GRADS: there will be some Practice Confirmation talks coming up the next few
Fridays; Brigitte Assi (6/3), Iman Ferestade (13/3) and Eamon Little (20/3). Confirm with me your attendance.
