Title: Reimagining Sexual Objectification
Abstract: What is bad sex? Feminist theorists have articulated normative categories of good and bad sex that hinge on the assumption that what makes bad sex bad is the fact that it sexually objectifies women, thus reinforcing women’s sexual subordination.
However, what if sexual objectification is not exhaustive of subordination? In this paper, I motivate the claim that sexual objectification is not necessarily bad by demonstrating that it can exist in congruity with broader feminist ideals of sexual ethics:
equal participation and mutual recognition. Thus, I displace sexual objectification from its supposed normative power in constituting instances of bad sex by arguing that sexual objectification itself is not sufficient in constituting subordination.
