Title: A Property Cluster Theory of Belief

Abstract: Belief has been extensively studied in philosophy, particularly by philosophers of mind and epistemologists. While philosophers of mind typically address the question “What constitutes belief?”, epistemologists commonly address the question “What properties characterise belief?”. Their answers to such questions often imply an essentialist view that belief has necessary and sufficient properties. However, theories that characterise belief in terms of necessary and sufficient properties are vulnerable to counterexamples. Therefore, in this paper, I aim to introduce a novel theory of belief. Called “a Property Cluster Theory of Belief”, this theory defines belief as a cognitive state characterised by a cluster of properties that contingently co-occur in a cognitive agent because certain mechanisms tend to hold them together. I then argue that this theory has several advantages over other theories of belief.
