Wealso need to look outside to elders of other cultures that seem radically different to ours, elders who have memories and knowledge of times before modernity and access to wisdom we have forgotten.

Wow! I'm 51 and absolutely terrified of the state of our planet. I've been guilty of thinking the younger generations will care enough to come up with solutions. My own kids (in their 20s) are very hesitant about having kids which I understand but it also makes me sad. Thank you for educating me today about the pressure we Gen X people are putting on our children. I need to adjust my thinking and start helping. Thank you!

We\u2019ve observed generations younger than ours and breathed a huge sigh of relief: they get climate change. They\u2019re out at the marches. They care about it. They\u2019re so much more knowledgeable and socially conscious than we ever were growing up! Plus they\u2019ve got social media, so they can organize more efficiently. WHEW. The future is in good hands. The kids are alright. They\u2019re going to save the world.
Isabelle Drury: I am what you would call a \u2018Zillennial\u2019. This means I was born on the cusp of the Millennial and Generation Z demographic cohorts. I grew up with the first iterations of social media. I remember when Facebook was still cool and when Instagram or TikTok didn\u2019t even exist. My first phone was a brick, I coveted the Motorola Razr, and I didn\u2019t graduate to a touch screen until I turned 13. Oh, and like many of my fellow young people, I grew up with the inescapable knowledge that the climate crisis presented a very real risk to my future.
Young people around the world are feeling the climate change fear. In a survey of 10,000 young people\u2013aged 16-25 years old\u2013across 10 countries, 59% said they were very or extremely worried about climate change. More than half felt sad, anxious, angry, powerless, and guilty, and over 45% said their feelings about climate change negatively affected their daily lives. If these feelings of doom weren\u2019t enough, 39% felt hesitant to have children due to uncertainty about the future.
They probably think it\u2019s encouraging. I can imagine it\u2019s a relief to see Gen Z\u2019s dedication if you come from a generation where climate change wasn\u2019t a popular topic. But it's actually incredibly demoralizing. It feels more like they\u2019re saying to me, \u201CYeah, I know we fucked up the planet pretty bad (unknowingly and knowingly), but I can\u2019t do anything about it now. It\u2019s your problem. Good luck!\u201D
There\u2019s not only carelessness in the words that have been said to me but in actions too \u2013 voting for damaging policies for immediate gratification (ahem, Brexit) or continuing with actions that we know harm the Earth.
For our entire lives, we\u2019ve been hearing about climate change, its disastrous effects, and the consistent refusal of politicians to do anything about it, and now it\u2019s our responsibility to fix it. We\u2019ve suddenly become the generation that's going to save the world.
Every day, a new climate catastrophe is plastered across the news, or there\u2019s a new petition to sign against a disastrous law that will set us back 50 years. Then there's the Extinction Rebellion founder telling us we face annihilation, and another leader saying that if we don\u2019t get emissions to zero within months, humanity is going to be wiped out. Yet, apart from an Instagram account telling us to use a reusable cup and buy second-hand clothing, there\u2019s no real guidance on what to do next. How can one even begin to piece together a solution in a system that\u2019s so broken?
There\u2019s a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00E9ry from the book The Little Prince that goes: \u201CIf you want to build a ship, don\u2019t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.\u201D I feel like this is the perfect example of what we young activists need the most: guidance.
Whether you\u2019re 36 or 72, you have a whole lot more experience than we do, and for a crisis that defies obvious solutions, we could do with a bit of hand-holding. Tell us how the hippie movement rose and failed, and the mistakes you made. Tell us how CND (nuclear disarmament) has kept going for over 50 years while up against slow change. Tell us how the Big Ask campaign introduced the Climate Change Bill. Tell us how we failed to stop the Iraq war but picked ourselves up and carried on anyway.
How are we meant to become agents of powerful change without the knowledge of what has worked before? We need to be taught what has worked before \u2013 and what hasn\u2019t \u2013 so we don\u2019t waste our time making the same mistakes over and over again.
To my fellow young people, humans have been trying to solve the issues that other humans have created for millennia. Grieve the loss of a type of future you may no longer have, and celebrate the whisperings of a better world for us all. The world isn\u2019t in our hands to save or destroy. We don\u2019t need to be hopeful or hopeless, we just need to be.

Quantum computing is a new technology that leverages the laws of quantum mechanics to produce exponentially higher performance for certain types of calculations, offering the possibility of major breakthroughs across several end markets.
The technology works by calculating with qubits, which can represent 0 and 1 at the same time. By contrast, classical computing calculates with transistors that represent either 0 or 1. In quantum computing, power increases exponentially in proportion to the number of qubits; with classical computing, power increases in a 1:1 relationship to the number of transistors.
While classical computers are better adapted to everyday, simple processing, the new machines are well suited for complex tasks such as quantum simulations in molecular chemistry, optimization, and prime factorization.
Recent innovation suggests that the first generation of fault-tolerant quantum computing could be operational by the end of this decade, with some quantum-computing companies suggesting it could be even sooner.
Countries and corporates set ambitious new targets for reducing emissions at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). Those goals, if fully met, would represent an extraordinary annual investment of $4 trillion by 2030, the largest reallocation of capital in human history. But the measures would only reduce warming to between 1.7C and 1.8C by 2050, far short of the 1.5C level believed necessary to avoid catastrophic, runaway climate change.
Quantum computing could help reduce emissions in some of the most challenging or emissions-intensive areas, such as agriculture or direct-air capture, and could accelerate improvements in technologies required at great scale, such as solar panels or batteries. This article offers a look at some of the breakthroughs the technology could permit and attempts to quantify the impact of leveraging quantum-computer technology that are expected become available this decade.
Quantum computing could bring about step changes throughout the economy that would have a huge impact on carbon abatement and carbon removal, including by helping to solve persistent sustainability problems such as curbing methane produced by agriculture, making the production of cement emissions-free, improving electric batteries for vehicles, developing significantly better renewable solar technology, finding a faster way to bring down the cost of hydrogen to make it a viable alternative to fossil fuels, and using green ammonia as a fuel and a fertilizer.
Addressing the five areas designated in the Climate Math Report as key for decarbonization, we have identified quantum-computing use cases that can pave the way to a net-zero economy. We project that by 2035 the use cases listed below could make it possible to eliminate more than 7 gigatons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) from the atmosphere a year, compared with the current trajectory, or in aggregate more than 150 gigatons over the next 30 years (Exhibit 1).
Batteries are a critical element of achieving zero-carbon electrification. They are required to reduce CO2 emissions from transportation and to obtain grid-scale energy storage for intermittent energy sources such as solar cells or wind.
