Master Your Theory is a series of books, each of which is an instructionbook and workbook combined. It follows a comprehensive course which is planned so that the student may begin with the very first principles of music theory and work gradually upwards through the grades.
By working out the exercises which immediately follow each point made, the student will consolidate knowledge at every step of the way, and at the same time revise facts already learnt. The course is designed to be useful equally to examination students, AMEB and otherwise, and to those who wish to become better musicians as they learn more about how music is organised and written.
These books will help the busy teacher who realizes the importance of theory for students but finds the practical lesson all too short to include time for theory instruction. The student may work through them largely alone, reading the explanations and working out the exercises, checking with the teacher whenever necessary.

Four part harmony: One of the new chords for this grade is viib, therefore my students took the opening in A major of a rising scale passage A B C# to be an invitation to use Ib viib I. However they were criticised for commencing with a first inversion chord. I can find no way of making this formula work commencing on chord I, so maybe I Vb I was expected.
Unfortunately, theory books, other than Master Your theory (grade 4) and Blitz (grade 5) appear to show no examples of openings commencing with a rising scale, though there are plenty of examples of openings beginning with scale degrees 3 2 1, where commencing in root position in this formula would be appropriate. ( i.e. I viib Ib ).

You can use this book to prepare for AMEB examinations, or just use it to increase your skill and become a better musician as you learn how music is organised and written.
The AMEB offers the online course for students to work through at their own pace. At least in theory, (see what I did there?) students completing theory and having it automatically marked outside of lesson time should make lessons more productive.
The lessons are sequentially structured pretty much as they would be in a traditional theory book such as Master Your Theory. The lessons progress as a Powerpoint presentation might, with text being the primary delivery mechanism, supported by music notation and sound. Here is an example of a slide from a lesson taken from the free trial area of the site:
I am very glad that the scale here appears gradually and each note sounds as it appears. Finally, a theory resource that immediately links a theoretical concept with an aural concept! Adding the notes one at a time also allows students to process the intervals (if they indeed remember what the tones and semitones are). However, this slide also demonstrates the issues that the course generally has in communicating with a younger audience and in effectively utilising this medium.
The language is a little complicated for younger students, but I am willing to give the AMEB a pass on that one as it is very difficult to pitch this kind of package at an audience ranging from lower primary school to adult. My six year old student quite enjoys working through the lessons with help from Mum or Dad.
There is a feature for assigning students to classes and setting work with due dates. This is a great idea, and could work very well in classroom programs. Year 7 and Year 8 music classes that rely heavily on traditional theory textbooks would do well to give the platform a shot. In a computer lab class, the classroom teacher is there to assist if need be and will quickly learn the quirks of the interface. The AMEB would do well to consider selling a site license rather than individual licenses for educational institutions.
