Save the Date! 2024 Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Convention

April 10-12, 2024

Stevens Point, WI

Registration will open in late January!

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Wisconsin’s unique lake law, Chapter 33: Public Inland Waters. The legislature and governor worked together in the early 1970s to establish a collaborative research and management framework that lives on today as the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Partnership. The law also created the pathway for landowners around lakes to form Public Inland Lake Protection and Rehabilitation Districts. Today, over 250 lake districts exist in the state, and they all operate under the same policies and rules laid out in Chapter 33. As we gather in Stevens Point for our annual Convention, we’ll look back at the progress made over 50 years of partnering to protect and restore waters, and we will collectively look ahead to the next 50 years to ensure that the next generations of water lovers will continue our legacy of proactive lake, river, and watershed management.

Funding Opportunities

DNR Angler Recruitment Grants

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging individuals and organizations to submit grant applications to build the community of anglers through community and school-based fishing programs. This grant is supported by the federal Sport Fish Restoration fund, which is generated by an excise tax on fishing equipment and motorboat fuel.

Fishers & Farmers - Funding for Stream/Farm Projects

Fishers & Farmers Partnership awards National Fish Habitat Partnership funding to locally-led projects in upper Mississippi River Basin watersheds each year. Funded projects improve farms and fish habitat; address a root cause of watershed problems; support landowner engagement, communications, monitoring, science, or construction; and align with their Strategic Plan. Non-government, county, state or federal agriculture and natural resources organizations may apply. One-to-one cost share is required. Applications are available in the last quarter of the year, due in February. Decisions are made in March.

Municipal Flood Control Grants Program

Recognizing the responsibility to protect life, health, and property from flood damages, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources offers this grant assistance package to all cities, villages, towns, tribal governments, and metropolitan sewerage districts concerned with municipal flood control management. This grant program is not intended to be an emergency relief program and instead a way to proactively mitigate the impacts of a changing climate; reduce flood hazard vulnerabilities; and improve the resilience and preparedness of Wisconsin municipalities.
