Project DHARMA: Pushing South and Southeast Asian Textual Sources into the Digital WorldArlo Griffiths (EFEO, Paris) and Dániel Balogh (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
This presentation gives an overview of past and especially ongoing efforts to build up large digital corpora of epigraphic and other primary sources from the Sanskrit tradition and related vernacular traditions in South and Southeast Asia (India, Cambodia, Indonesia, etc.). The focus is on the ERC-sponsored DHARMA project (Paris, Berlin, Naples) and its adaptation of TEI to the needs of Indic materials. Topics we address include the plans for a DHARMA-base for storing and querying texts and data about the support objects; a proposed expansion of the ISO 15919 transliteration standard to cover a wider range of languages whose native writing system is derived from the Indian Brāhmī script; and a range of EpiDoc customisations for the encoding of features associated with Indic scripts and distinctive South and Southeast Asian manifestations of the epigraphic habit.
