Dear List Members

If you use science or technology in your work with heritage, we'd love to hear from you.

The Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (RICHeS) has commissioned the first ever UK-wide survey of the heritage and conservation science workforce.

If your work involves any scientific or technological analysis of cultural heritage, please complete the survey to improve our understanding of the workforce, its skills and needs, and demand for services.

We're interested in input from:
- individuals engaged in heritage and/or conservation science activity
- employers of heritage science professionals
- commissioners of heritage and conservation science services.

Heritage and Conservation Science Workforce Survey - closing date 31st August 2026.

Heritage science plays a vital role in understanding, preserving and helping people to enjoy the UK’s heritage. It spans work on individual objects, landscapes and sites, buildings and engineering. It brings together people from different scientific, technical and humanities backgrounds and who work in academia, heritage organisations, commercial organisations and research institutes.

We want to understand the distribution of this workforce better and the research aims to inform future workforce planning, training provision, investment and connections to equipment.

The research is being led by Icon, the Institute of Conservation in partnership with the National Heritage Science Forum and Preservation Matters.
Find out more about the project on the Icon website: https://www.icon.org.uk/about-us/policy-and-advocacy/research/heritage-and-conservation-science-workforce-survey.html

Kind regards
Caroline Peach
