(Pittsfield, Mass.) - More than 300 lots of outstanding, fresh-to-the-
market merchandise in a broad array of categories will be offered at
an exceptional antique auction slated for Saturday, September 27, by
Fontaine's Auction Gallery. The sale will be held at Fontaine's
spacious showroom facility, located at 1485 W. Housatonic Street in

“This auction will feature hundreds of wonderful items from prominent
area estates,” said John Fontaine of Fontaine's Auction Gallery, “and
it's just one of four great sales planned for the rest of the year.”
The other sales are the Henry Brownell Estate Auction (Saturday,
October 18); an Important Antique Clock Auction (Saturday, November
8); and a Discovery Auction (Saturday, December 8).
Four lots in the Sept. 27 sale are capable of hammering for $50,000
or more. They are:
• A rare and beautiful Louis Comfort Tiffany carved walnut corner arm
chair in very good and clean condition, with original finish. The top-
crest rail is heavily carved, with a panel showing acorns and oak
leaves. The chair has a nice tapestry seat, with padded arms and back
(est. $50,000-$75,000)
• A high-quality Petit & Boh Company 20-piece carved oak dining set,
with carvings that are intricate, proportional and deep. The suite
comprises a two-piece cabinet, sideboard, 60-inch table, server and 16
matching chairs, in very good condition, with original finish (est.
$50,000-$75,000).
• A gorgeous J. & J.W. Meeks pierce-carved, marble-top rosewood
etagere in very good condition, with clean original finish. The piece
features a nice carved flowing center crest over a bonnet top with
filigree and scrolled carvings centered with a double rose. Very nice.
(est. $45,000-$65,000).
• A Tiffany Studios 22-inch banded Dogwood floral table lamp on an
American Indian bronze base
signed on the bottom plate “Tiffany Studios New York 529.” The leaded
glass shade shows a geometric shade throughout, created by green and
white striated glass (est. $45,000-$55,000).
Fans of rare and vintage automobiles will be treated to a pair of
beauties to bid on. One is a 1956 Chrysler Imperial 4-door sedan,
completely frame-off restored and with a V-8 Hemi Fire Power 280-
horsepower engine and 33,386 actual miles (est. $10,000-$15,000). The
other is a 2002 Pontiac Trans Am 35th Anniversary Collectors Edition
car, with performance package (est. $20,000-$30,000).
Fine period furniture will dominate the day's proceedings.
Anticipated top lots include a J. & J.W. Meeks 6-piece laminated
rosewood “Hawkins Extra” parlor set (est. $35,000-$50,000); a J. &
J.W. Meeks gothic rosewood cylinder secretary, signed (est. $25,000-
$35,000); a J.H. Belter laminated rosewood 3-piece parlor set (sofa
and two side chairs) in the Milwaukee pattern (est. $20,000-$30,000).
Other furniture pieces expected to do well include an R.J. Horner 10-
piece Atlas carved oak figural dining room set, with 60-inch diameter
table (est. $20,000-$30,000); an R.J. Horner 16-piece carved oak
dining set (est. $15,000-$25,000); an R.J. Horner 3-door mahogany
Atlas bookcase (est. $15,000-$20,000); and a Potter & Stymus inlaid
walnut marble-top sideboard (est. $12,000-$15,000).
Rounding out the category: a J.H. Belter laminated oak fountain elms
arm chair, with heavily carved crest (est. $14,000-$16,000); a Herter
Bros. inlaid and incised rosewood queen-size bed, 84” x 66” x
64” (est. $10,000-$15,000); a large carved walnut 14-piece Victorian
ding room set (est. $12,000-$15,000); and an R.J. Horner figural
carved oak three-door leaded bookcase (est. $8,000-$12,000).
Vintage lamps are certain to light up the room. Highlights include a
Tiffany Studios 24-1/2-inch green curtain border floor lamp (est.
$25,000-$35,000); an Austrian bronze and ivory figural lamp, signed B.
Zach (est. $15,000-$25,000); a Pairpoint puffy multi-color rose table
lamp on a rose library base; and a Handel 18-inch reverse painted
Oriental pheasant table lamp (both est. $12,000-$15,000).
Noteworthy because not many of his works often reach the open market,
an oil on canvas painting by Guy A. Wiggins (1883-1962), titled
“October at Coryell House, Lambertville, N.J.”, signed twice, is
expected to bring $2,000-$3,000. Also, a large oil on canvas rendering
of sailboats in a harbor by Hayley Lever (1876-1958), titled “East
Glouster 1928”, is estimated to bring $35,000-$45,000.
Other notables in the fine art category include a portrait of a Latin
American woman wearing a red coat, by Angel Botello (1913-1986),
signed (est. $12,000-$15,000); a monumental KPM plaque of Ruth in a
wheat field with a bundle of wheat under her arm, signed H. Dittrich
(est. $10,000-$15,000); and work titled “African American Rabbit
Hunter” attributed to William Aiken (est. $8,000-$12,000).
Sculptures will be in evidence, to include a bronze and ivory pair of
tango dancers in a striking pose by Dimitri H. Chiparus (1888-1950),
expected to soar to $25,000-$35,000; a carved marble sculpture of a
sleeping baby on an incised pedestal, by an unknown artist (est.
$15,000-$25,000); and a figural work by Pasquale Caviletti
(1859-1952), titled “Winged Male Angels” (est. $10,000-$15,000).
The music bidders will be hearing just might be emanating from a
Pillard 2-piece carved oak cylinder music box with mother of pearl and
brass inlay, in good working order (est. $15,000-$25,000); a Regina
upright walnut music box, circa 1892, with nine 19-inch discs and all
teeth intct (est. $8,000-$10,000); and an Edison Class “M” coin-
operated floor model cylinder player (est. $7,500-$10,000).
Then again, the music might be coming from the inlaid rosewood and
bronze mounted Steinway baby grand piano (est. $15,000-$25,000). Other
lots from various categories include a monumental 9-foot carved
mahogany fireplace mantel (est. $15,000-$25,000); a pair of carved
walnut winged griffin pedestals (est. $15,000-$20,000); and a Russian
enameled silver bear inkwell (est. $12,000-$15,000).
