CALL FOR PAPERS (Abstracts due March 4th 2011):

FIRST I DREAM, Third Annual Dialoguing Difference Conference, May 26 & 27, 2011

We are now accepting submissions for the University of Washington Women of Color Collective’s third annual conference. In an effort to engage scholarship by women of color and their allies, this conference will provide a forum for emergent and senior scholars from all disciplines to share their work. We draw our theme this year from 17th century, Mexican nun and poet, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’ famous poem, Primero Sueño, sometimes translated as First I Dream. Following in the foot steps of this nun’s dream of an epistemology of liberation and equality, this conference will reflect upon the role of dreams and imagination as a starting point for the transformation of our community/-ies. Questions to consider: How are we reconceptualizing women of color feminism in the current moment? How might we think about transformation through radical coalitional labor? What is the relationship of dreaming to the individual and the collective in the context of social change? How does imagination function in the work of women of color writers, artists, and thinkers? How has the legacy of women of color feminism informed current articulations of feminist theory and praxis?

Furthermore, conceptually, presenters can also engage with any number of the following:

  • Environmental landscapes and racial cartographies
  • Transnational feminist praxis and global imaginaries
  • Envisioning radical feminist futures
  • Anticolonial feminisms and revolutionary thought
  • Creating new communities, building collectivities
  • Queer of color critique and transformational politics
  • Women of color artists and the work of insurgency

The questions and concepts are mere guides, and in no way should you feel limited by them. We encourage submissions from a variety of disciplines as to enable a larger network of scholars. We hope to garner a range of work that reflects the vibrant scholarship by women of color and their allies at the university and beyond.

Abstracts (or panel proposals) should be between 250 and 500 words.  Submit online here:http://students.washington.edu/wocc/?page_id=62

Abstract deadline: Friday, March 4, 2011
