Please join us in welcoming January's featured poet, Alan Braverman.
Alan, Brooklyn poet, painter, musician, activist, and retired NYC schoolteacher, and is still working as an Early Resolution Counselor at the DOE. He began writing poetry in a Kansas Christian College.
Escaping the draft, this institution became his sanctuary (although he is Jewish). He wrote controversial poems that were published in the school newspaper, until they were censured. After college, Alan stopped writing, and taught social studies, at Brooklyn Technical HS. Nine years ago, he attended an open mic at Ken Siegelman’s Poetry Outreach, in Barnes and Noble, in Park Slope. Ken was Brooklyn's Poet Laureate, and hosted the readings, inspiring Alan to write again. Sadly, Mr. Seigelman, passed away, in 2009. Alan, subsequently, had been featured at the Boulevard Bards, and Barnes and Noble, with Anthony Vigorito, as the MC, and Evie Ivy’s Open Mic, at the Green Pavilion. He also had two of his poems, included in The Venetian Hour, Dinner With the Muse, Volume II, edited by Evie Ivy, and one poem in Brownstone Poets Anthology. Finally, being an artist, Alan illustrated a book of poems, by Anthony Vigorito, the host of Ken Siegelman's Brooklyn Poetry Outreach and Tom Kane's BookMark Bards.
Following Alan's reading will be the open mic, so put a poem or two in your pocket and join us for our first event of 2017!
Look forward to seeing you there,
Anthony
