Question about Nayar with regard to sex and marriage

It says in the book that Nayar women can (and do) engage with one or
more men in a continuing sexual liaison relationship. THe man or men
are required to
present her with gifts 3 times each year until the relationship was
terminated. In return the man or men could stay the night with her. It
says that if she becomes pregnant one of the men (doesn't have to be
biological father) accepts paternity but he is not responsible for
support of the child and does not live with them. What about
marriage? Later in the chapter it says that these women are not
legally allowed to have sex with anyone except their husband.
I am confused???
