Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering, one of the departments of the Engineering Faculty at Stellenbosch University. Here you can find out what studying civil engineering is like, how to apply for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, what research work we are doing, information on academic and support staff as well as register for a CPD course or subscribe to our mailing list to receive CPD course information.
The Department offers a four-year, ECSA accredited, undergraduate Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree in Civil Engineering, which can lead to registration as a professional engineer. We take pride in developing highly skilled, well-rounded professional engineers.
Civil engineering is the development of infrastructure, effecting every sphere of the modern society. This ranges from water resource development and management, transport planning and road construction, design of large buildings and bridges, the interaction between structures and the earth, as well as all aspects of construction management. The civil engineer plays a pivotal role in society and has the opportunity to improve the everyday lives of people!
Stellenbosch University Faculty of Engineering is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new hybrid online Masters Degree in Engineering Management, specifically designed to equip early to mid-career engineers and scientists with the skills they require to manage engineering, technology, innovation, strategy, projects, people and places.
The hybrid online delivery mode is well-suited to part-time students anywhere, be they located in Stellenbosch, Sandton, Sebokeng, Sahara, Sydney, Singapore, Surrey, Seattle or Santiago. The language of tuition is English.
Biomedical Engineering is the application of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to provide for health-related needs. Biomedical Engineering is inherently multidisciplinary (persons from multiple disciplines contribute) and interdisciplinary (expertise from multiple disciplines must be integrated).
There are multiple routes into biomedical engineering at Stellenbosch University. Some of these routes are provided by the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, while the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences also offer routes into biomedical engineering.
Stellenbosch University Faculty of Engineering is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new coursework based hybrid online Masters in Engineering (MEng) degree specialising in Fire Safety Engineering which has been designed to upskill engineers from different backgrounds with the knowledge they require to understand, analyse, and design for different types of fire risks.
The structured Masters in Engineering, MEng(S), is a structured hybrid online masters degree specialising in fire safety engineering. It is offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, to engineers across the world. The language of tuition is English.
The degree is offered in a hybrid online mode, in full- and part-time modality. Throughout the course of the degree students will only need to come to campus once for all fire engineering modules, and that will be to conduct fire experiments and practical sessions regarding fire safety systems. All exams, assessments and classes can be completed either face-to-face or online. It is expected that a full-time student will complete the programme in two years, while a part-time student will do it in three years.
The Materials Engineering group, situated in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch, is working with many of the leading national and international institutions in the area of materials engineering. The level of contact varies from fully funded research projects, through to partial funding of projects or studentships, to general collaboration and interchange of knowledge and expertise.
The group has established expertise, equipment and laboratory facilities to conduct research into materials engineering related problems. Our research focuses on developing numerical-experimental techniques to obtain an understanding of material behaviour for modelling and predictive capabilities.
Dr Vinay Shekhar is a new lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at Stellenbosch University. He holds a BSc(Eng), MSc, and PhD from the University of Cape Town (UCT). In his PhD, he investigated the response of GFRP and steel V-structures to localised air-blast loads. The study involved the manufacture of GFRP V-structures using vacuum infusion (VI) and the use of high-speed cameras and digital image correlation (DIC) to film and investigate the transient response of these V-structures during the blast loading events. His lecturing background includes teaching Mechanical Vibrations, Engineering Dynamics, and Solid Mechanics at UCT. He is currently involved in lecturing Strength of Materials and Machine Design. His research interests include material testing and characterisation, and numerical modelling and optimisation of structures subjected to impact and blast loads.

TF Design was founded in 1993 and is situated in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch. We serve a wide variety of clients across the entire industry. We specialise in the fields of Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics, but are also strongly involved in general Mechanical design.
Our company PJ Consultants Pty. Ltd has had dealings with TFD group of companies since 2012. We purchase from them mobile clinics specially designed and exported for our HIV Aids programmes. We can highly recommend this reputable company. They provide an excellent design team that backs up their very professional production plant. We recommend TFD to anyone looking for a quality partner for their engineering designs and production.
We as HYSA Systems approached TFD six to seven years back seeking engineering solution to some of our challenges and TFD offered us with unique solutions, by offering concept to end prototypes. We are extremely pleased with their service and since then TFD has become our preferred partner to our engineering needs.
Thank you, TFD, for the excellent service and professional manner in which our cooling unit was designed and constructed. As a result our project is a success. Well done to Dana Swanepoel and his team.
PR Engineering is a dynamic and experienced consulting engineering firm with the capacity to provide comprehensive and value-driven design and project management services. As providers of engineering solutions to clients in the property, commercial and industrial markets, our dedicated and professional team of engineering specialists have built a reputation for providing viable, durable and cost-effective solutions to meet challenging project requirements throughout Africa.
I focused on industrial engineering because of its broad range of applications. I did a joint PhD in industrial engineering and economics looking at the topic of industrial policy, and, more specifically, on how developing countries can make better policy decisions that support sustainable development.
