Dear Anthony and dear all linux users. If somehow you found problems to run Anthony's version of AntConc, getting this error:
tk-WARNING **: 22:19:34.871: Could not load a pixbuf from icon theme.
This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be found.
**
Gtk:ERROR:../gtk/gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/16x16/status/image-missing.png: Unrecognized image file format (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 3)
Bail out! Gtk:ERROR:../gtk/gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/16x16/status/image-missing.png: Unrecognized image file format (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 3)

just know that the problem is on gdk-pixbuf2. The solution is to downgrade to a prior version namely
lib32-gdk-pixbuf2-2.42.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst and the lib32 correlate libfile,

Now AntConc 4.05 works perfectly

Hi Gian,

I've realized that I'm not getting sent the first email of a discussion group thread, so I haven't seen any of the recent group posts. Sorry! I need to investigate why this is happening.

As for the error, this is quite odd because AntConc doesn't use tk or Gtk at all. What Linux box are you using?

The error seems to be related to icons. Again, AntConc doesn't include an icon on Linux so I wonder if this error is happening only on your machine.

Laurence.

It is happening to me as well. I'm using Linux Mint.

NAME="Linux Mint"
VERSION="20.3 (Una)"
ID=linuxmint
ID_LIKE=ubuntu
PRETTY_NAME="Linux Mint 20.3"
VERSION_ID="20.3"

The error message is:

This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be found.

Hi Rick,

Thank you for the information. As you are using the same linux distro as me, the error is indeed surprising. I think it would be good to work through the problem and identify the cause. First, can you confirm that you are using the latest version (4.0.11). If so, can you then try to run AntConc on a completely clean system (e.g. via a Live USB version of the OS).

Let me know if you still get the errors and then I'll start investigating the problem. Of course, everything works fine here, but I run the software on the same computer that I built it, so a missing library is a possible cause.

Laurence.

Yes, the Help About says I'm running 4.0.11 on my machine.

I downloaded Mint 20.3 (Una) 64 Bit and created a virtual machine using the iso image, then downloaded AntConv version 4.0.11 and it failed the exact same way.

I ran the portable version through gdb and this is what I got. It's happening both on Manjaro Gnome with wayland and Manjaro Xfce with X11 I could get the 3.5 version one working by installing libxcrypt-compat though so perhaps that will help any others with installation problems.

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for this information. Note that AntConc 3.5 was written in Perl and AntConc 4 is written in Python so I would doubt that the strategy to get AntConc 3.5 working would help with AntConc 4.

Regards,

Laurence.

Hi! For what it’s worth, I have the same problem under Ubuntu 22.04.

(AntConc.sh:115690): Gtk-WARNING **: 09:38:43.275: Could not load a pixbuf from icon theme.

Strangely, that icon file in question does exist.

I guess it uses GTK to load the icon because Qt uses GTK for native theming?

Did anybody manage to solve this yet?

Thanks,
Frederik

Hi Rich,

Thank you for this update. Linux distros seem to be an issue. Can you try installing Protant, to see if that runs:

This uses the latest versions of all the packages that are required and uses a different strategy for fonts. If this works, I can probably fix AntConc for you, too.

Laurence.

Hi Rich,

Thank you for  pointing out the problem with the link. I've fixed that now. Also, thank you for the error report. This is disappointing. It really does seem like a tiny font mismatch causes the entire program to crash on certain versions of Linux. It really illustrates the need for something like FlatPack, which properly embeds everything into the app itself (although in theory, that's what I suppose to be doing by packaging the app as I do).

Once I figure out the issue with one software tool, all of them should work. It really seems to be a minor font issue.

Laurence.

I'm running ElementaryOS, so maybe this will help those running Ubuntu or Ubuntu derivatives. I was able to get AntConc running by emptying the .cache/fontconfig folder and running the following command: sudo sed -i '/<description/d; /its\:/d' /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/*conf

It still throws a couple driver-related errors, but that's probably just my system. Good luck!

Hello Gian and Laurence,
Thanks for the solution, but I was wondering whether Laurence had been able to intervene at the level of the code yet. AntConc 4 still crashes with Ubuntu 22.04, and the fix Gian suggests, while undoubtedly effective, is not the most elegant option in that it means downgrading to a presumably deprecated version (and compiling the binaries, which is not trivial either).
Many thanks in advance for any answers. For the moment, I'm sticking to 3.5.9, much as I'd like to move on.
Best,
Graham.
