Hi all,

I'm attempting to use the BNC word list that Laurence has very kindly uploaded onto his site as a reference list for a keyword analysis (http://www.laurenceanthony.net/software/antconc/).

I am using AntConc version 3.4.3. When I try to load this list as a reference word list in the 'Keyword list' tool preferences, I receive the error message "One or more of the rank column values in BNC_wordlist.txt is not a number". Obviously, as it's been uploaded by Laurence himself the format of the word list is that required for AntConc, and I've removed the first couple of lines of the .txt file which gives information on the total number of types/tokens etc.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem with this (or any other) word list when loading it as a reference list, and if so how was it solved? I'm relatively new to AntConc, so it might be something very simple!

Thanks a lot.

David

Very strange. Have you loaded in some old settings file that is messing with things? I recommend you create a new folder, put AntConc, the BNC ref list, and one target corpus file in the folder, load the two files into AntConc and see what happens.

Laurence.

I deleted the program, re-downloaded it, did as you said with the new folder and the same error message appeared! But then I downloaded the BNC word list again and it worked!! Hurrah! Thank you!

How odd. But, I'm glad you've sorted out the issue now.

Laurence.
