Hi, Laurence

I've watched short video clips of Antconc tutoring in Youtube. Thanks
lots for your work!

I'm trying to divide my corpus text into categories like 'noun',
'verb', etc. I got my text tagged with claws www trial service. When I
opened the file in Antconc, I could see, for example, the total
frequency of NN(common noun) in the Wordlist Tab.

Now, can I get the list of each Noun with frequency except typing each
word? Any advice would be thankful!

Regards,
Esther

Hi Esther,

I just noticed that I missed your earlier question of last month. Sorry!

There is a way to generate the frequency information you want. What you need to do is use the Concordance (or Plot) tool. In the search box, type *_<YOUR POS TAG> and then let AntConc generate all the concordance lines for that search. The total hits will equal the frequency of occurrence of the tag.

So, to search for singular nouns, you would type something like:
*_NN1    (the * means 'any word character as defined in the global settings)

For any noun forms, you could use:
*_N*  (which would then include NN1, NN2 and other forms depending on your tagging scheme)

I hope that helps!

Laurence.

Dear Laurence,

I am very sorry to bother you again.
As I asked in my email, what I am pursuing to do is to find the frequency of only all types of adjectives used in tagged text.
What I mean is not to find the frequency of the whole adjectives, but the frequency of each adjective (e.g., possible, impossible, apparent, etc.).
I would really appreciate it if you could possibly help me out.

Dear Mifa,

To get the frequency of each adjective (or any other part of speech), you can use the cluster tool, with the cluster size set to 1. Then, just search for *_JJ and all the adjectives will be listed with their respective frequencies.

I hope that helps.

Laurence.

Dear Laurence,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Thanks to your invaluable advice, I was able to find the frequency of each adjective.

I would really like to express my deepest gratitude to you for helping me out.

The more I use the AntConc, the more I have an attachment to the AntConc.

Thank you so much for developing the tool.

With the warmest regards,

Hi, Laurence

I bought a new computer and it is windows 8.1. I downloaded the AntConc 3.4.1w and save it in the Download.
When I clicked the icon, it didn't start. I was just wondering how I can run it as I did in my old computer (windows 7).
I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Dear Mas,

AntConc 3.4.1 will run perfectly in Win 8. Perhaps you have an old settings file in the folder with AntConc that is pointing to some old files.

Please try it again perhaps putting 3.4.1 in a completely new empty folder.

Laurence.

Dear Mas,
I'm using AntConc on my 64 bit Win 8.1 with no problems. In addition to Laurence solution, you may try to run the application in Windows compatibility mode. In order to do that you need to right click on the icon of AntConc then select "properties". When you see properties pane, click on "Compatibility" button. You'll see the list of operating systems over there. Just select one of the previous versions of Windows. If that doesn't solve your problem, try to run the application with administrator privileges. In order to do that again right click on the icon then select "Run as administrator". If you tried to run the application on a USB drive, that might be one of the reasons. Try to save AntConc on a local drive. If you saved the application within the same place of AntConc's previous version(s), try to save it on a different folder.

Best regards,
Umut

Hi again,

These are all good suggestions but I should make it clear for anyone who sees this discussion later that normally AntConc does not need to be run in compatibility mode or with administrator privileges in Win 8. Also, it can run without problems from a USB drive.

Laurence.

Dear Laurence and Umut,

I think I put 3.4.1 in a completely new empty folder and couldn't run it.
Also, I tried to run it in compatibility mode and with administrator privileges in Win 8, but I  couldn't run it.
Now I am in a hot water what to do. Is it something to do with McAfee virus software I installed in my computer?

Mifa,

I suggest the following.

1. Save AntConc 3.4.1 at the base of C: (i.e., c:\Anthony.exe)
2. Open the console (Start->Type console) and navigate to the base of c: through a series of c: .. commands
3. Launch AntConc by typing C:\> AntConc.exe
4. Note down any errors that appear in the console and report them back here.

I hope that helps.

Dear Laurence,

Thank you so much for your sugestions. As I am not so well-versed in computer, I couldn't figure out how to open the console.
So  I added a local user's account and I was able to download and run the AntConc.

Now I am struggling to down and run the AntConc 3.4.1 in my another computer (Vista).
I downloaded it on the desktop and in D, but when I double-clicked the icon, it didn't start. Nothing happened. This is the  same trouble  I had in my new computer (windows 8.1).

As always, I do appreciate Laurence's invaluable suggestions and guidance.

The fact that AntConc ran after you created a local user account in your 8.1 system suggests that you have installed some kind of protection software in both Vista and Win 8 that is preventing programs like AntConc running. I suggest you do the same in Vista as you did in Win 8.1 to get it working.

It sounds like AntConc used to run in your Vista system and then suddenly stopped working. If so, this is almost definitely something to do with other software that you have installed.

Good luck with fixing the problem. Perhaps report back here if you are successful. Others in the future will probably want to know what you did.

Laurence.

Mifa,

I noted you installed McAfee Antivirus.  Do you know how to turn it off?   Close all browsers and turn off McAfee... Click AntConc and see if it opens.

If it is the McAfee settings or Firewall that is interfering, then have you considered switching to AVG Antivirus.  Totally free, safe, and excellent.

Mifa,

One other thing that might be worth checking...

Sometimes when downloading any program from the Internet, the receiving computer or the anti-virus program being used can automatically change properties to "Read Only".  I had this happen several times to files or programs I downloaded.

Go to the exe file.  Right Click, move the cursor down to Properties.  At the bottom of the box that opens, look at Attributes.  It should NOT say Read Only.  If it is checked, UNcheck it, click OK.

Norton AV and McAfee AV are two of the worst control hogs of anti-virus programs... almost like they want to control a person's whole life, what a person eats (consumes from the Internet), what a person see (views on the Internet), etc.  Their Firewalls can block even Microsoft programs from updating.  Hence, the reason I suggested closing any Browser (so you're not directly on the Web), then temporarily turn off the AV firewall... OR, go to the AV Settings and turn the program OFF... then try to open Antconc.  There is very little risk of getting a virus with the AV off for just a couple minutes--just remember to turn it / firewall back on.

i feel badly that you need Antconc to finish your project but can't get it to run on your new computers.

Another idea.... it might solve the problem... download Antconc to a Flash Drive or External desktop drive.  That might eliminate any possible interference.  Worth a try.  If you load it on a FlashDrive, you can also take your drive to a Library or Student Computer center at a University and do your project using their computers.  Antconc on a Thumb can do all the same tasks as when loaded on a PC.

Once again thank you so much for your great advice. Probably I might try to download the AntConc to a Flash Drive or External Desktop as  last resort.
I understand that the anti-virus software prevents us from downloading a program at the right place and right time.
As for my old computer (Vista), I was able to download the AntConc 3.1.4, but I wasn't able to run it. However,  I downloaded the old version of the Antconand and it runs perfectly.

Thank you, Judy, for your invaluable information.

Glad to hear that you got AntConc working even though it was not the latest (I assume you tried 3.4.1 not 3.1.4 as you wrote).

3.4.1 should also work fine. Thousands of people recently used it on the Lancaster University MOOC without problem.

Good luck with your research.

Dear Laurence,

I understand how I can get the frequency of a part of speech (e.g., *_JJ).
Now I was wondering how I can get the frequency of both Noun, singular and Noun, plural on one occasion.  Can I search them typing *_NN, *_NNS or typing *_NN/*_NNS?
Would it be possible to get the frequency of both NN and NNS on one occasion?

Have you looked at the wildcard options in the global settings? You'll see you can use | to mean OR.

This question is related to my previous quesion in 2014.
I understand that in order to get the frequency of each adjective (or any other part of speech), I should use the cluster tool, with the cluster size set to 1. Then, just search for *_JJ and all the adjectives will be listed with their respective frequencies.
I was just wondering if you could possibly introduce any books or something that include formulas for frequency search or corpus analysis. I would really appreciate it if you could guide me to the right direction.

Dear Mifa,

This is a quite general question. Perhaps you could read one of the many general books on Corpus Linguistics. I also know that Martin Weisser has just released a book with lots of examples:

Weisser, Martin. (forthcoming February 2016). Practical Corpus Linguistics: an Introduction to Corpus-Based Language Analysis. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell.

I tried using the cluster tool search *_verb with the cluster size set to 1 as mentioned above. However, I get the message: "No results found." I'm using AntConc 4.0.

My tags are that way for the Spanish version verb, noun, det, adp, for example.

Any help with this would be great!

I would really appreciate it if you could possibly help me out.

Laurence.

Hi Melanie,

Sorry for the slow response. Did you manage to fix the problem?

If not, I suggest the following steps:
1. Go to the Tool settings and change the display setting to show both the word and the pos tag.
2. Generate a list of all single word clusters to check that everything is working correctly. Make sure you can see examples of what you want in that list.
3. Search for the pattern that you want, e.g. *_verb, and the results should be as you want.

I hope that helps!

Laurence.
