What version of OS X are you using?
Somebody emailed me directly about the exact same issue a few days
ago. I think the problem is almost certainly with X11. (Some users of
10.6 have already reported that it works fine.). Here are a few
questions:
1. Can you launch X11 yourself? (I think the answer is yes.)
2. What version of X11 you are using?
3. Have you tried installing an older version of X11 first, and then
launching AntConc? The link is on my page:
http://roundhere.net/journal/install-x11-on-mac-os-x-10-4-tiger-without-dvd/
4. Have you tried installing the older version of X11 first, and then
updating this through the software updater, and then, launching
AntConc?
I would very much like to resolve this problem, so let's try to sort this out.
Regards
Laurence.

It's really strange because I use 10.4.11 on my own Mac. So, the
version shouldn't be the problem. Did you update X11 1.1.3 through
the software updater?
Here are a few more questions, as a way to track down the source of
the problem. For all the tests, make sure that you launch X11 first.
Also, make sure that you don't have some old settings file in the same
place as AntConc.
1) Try putting AntConc on the desktop and launching from there. Does
anything happen? (For example, does AntConc launch for a fraction of a
second and then die?)
2) Try putting AntConc in the same folder as X11 itself. This is
probably the applications folder but you may have moved it somewhere
else. Does anything happen?
3) Try downloading and launching the older version of AntConc (3.2.0m)
from here (http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software/antconc3.2.0m.zip).
Does anything happen?
I have confirmation from various people that they can run AntConc
3.2.0 and 3.2.2 on OS X 10.4.11 and later versions. So, I'm sure the
solution is simple.
Good luck with the tests!
Laurence.
This is very important news. AntConc 3.2.0 and 3.2.2 are essentially
the same. So, can you tell you me how you got 3.2.0m to work? Also,
what country are you in? (This might be important to determine the
language settings on your computer.)
Laurence.

Thank you for the reports.
Ann, you seem to have the clearest problem, i.e., AntConc 3.2.0u runs,
but AntConc 3.2.2 fails on your system (which is identical to mine!)
Do you know how to run AntConc from the Terminal? If you do, it will
allow us to see the errors that the program is producing. (Basically,
just navigate to the folder where the Application is stored, e.g, the
Desktop, and then type the name of the application.)
Can you try launching both programs (3.2.0u and 3.2.2u) and report
back what the Terminal reports? Of course, 3.2.0u shouldn't report
back any problems, but 3.2.2u might.
Will, perhaps you could do the same and we can see if the same error
is being produced.
Thank you both so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
Laurence.
Just to follow up on the previous post, there are a few things I've
noticed about AntConc 3.2.2m on OS X.
1) Even when you close AntConc by clicking on the red close button in
the window, the application still seems to be running. So, the next
time you "run" the application, nothing happens because the system
still thinks the previous version is running. (I need to fix this
bug). So, you need to quit the application from the menu bar.
I wonder if this might be the reason for Will's problem?
2) Launching AntConc 3.2.2m from the Terminal is not as easy as I
thought. The application has a space in the name "AntConc 3.2.2m" but
the Terminal window does not accept names with spaces in them. (So, to
run the application from the Terminal, first change the application
name to "AntConc3.2.2m" via the File>Get Info menu option. Then,
assuming that the application is on your desktop, open the Terminal
and type:
>open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app
This should launch the application. Remember that if you are on OS X
10.4.11, you need to start X11 before you type in the above command.
Here's a link to more information about the Terminal:
http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/29520-how-launch-application-terminal.html
I get no errors at all on my system, but I am hoping that your system
produces some!
By the way, check out AntWordProfiler 1.200m on my software page:
http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software.html
This runs natively in Mac OS X, so there is no need to mess about with
X11 at all. I'm hoping to recode AntConc to work in the same way.
Good luck.
Laurence.
Thank you for the detailed explanation of what you have tried. The
more details that I get, the better I can find the source of the
problem. (I haven't heard back from Will or Ann, yet).
You wrote:
>>open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app
> -bash: Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app: is a directory
> (Same output if I put AntConc3.2.0m in the open line instead)
This is interesting. On my computer, after typing "open
Desktop/AntConc3.2.0m.app" or "open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app" I don't
get any output from the terminal and the application simply starts.
(This is the normal behavior.)
Can you confirm that you get the following output:
INPUT: >open Desktop/antconc3.2.0m.app
OUTPUT: >-bash: Desktop/antconc3.2.0m.app: is a directory
<With application starting>
INPUT: >open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app
OUTPUT: >-bash: Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app: is a directory
<With no application starting>
The report "...is a directory" is strange. The system should see the
.app folder as an application and run it. I still think there is a
problem with X11, and there are quite a few reports on the Internet
about unpredictable behavior of X11 even with major products like
Matlab. For example,
http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-2ZRQO8/index.html?solution=1-2ZRQO8
But, I am hopeful that the problem can be solved. If you can confirm
the above, I will investigate the problem more here.
Sorry for the trouble!
Laurence.

That is a fantastically clear explanation. Thank you so much.
So, it means almost definitely that the problem is *not* with AntConc,
but with X11 itself. This
would also explain why there appears to be many people running AntConc
successfully in all versions of OS X... X11 is notoriously poorly
supported on
OS X, and each new version update (e.g., 10.4.8, 10.4.9, 10.4.10,
10.4.11 ...) introduces changes to the system that can create problems
for X11 to run
correctly.
Because I don't develop X11, my only option is to program AntConc so
that it doesn't access any of the problem aspects of X11. This is
going to be a little difficult
because the problem will be hard to identify. I'll go back through the
code and see what changes to X11 access were introduced between
AntConc 3.2.0 and 3.2.2.
Maybe that will give us the solution.
The other option, which is much better, is to simply stop using X11
altogether. X11 looks horrible on OS X and we now know that it is also
unstable. I should program AntConc
to run natively in OS X, as my other program AntWordProfiler does
(http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software.html#antwordprofiler).
Let me think about which route would actually be quicker.
Thank you again.
I'll update this thread when I introduced a solution.
Laurence.
Thanks for the update! It's good to know that AntConc 3.2.0m seems to
run on most computers without problem. (It's still not as pretty as
AntWordProfiler, though).
What's Rosetta? I haven't heard of this.
I'm investigating the problem with AntConc 3.2.2m now. I'll probably
create a special version that outputs all errors on the user's machine
and then see if we can locate the problem there.
I'll get back to everyone shortly.
Laurence.
Great update! Thank you so much. But for me, the news is not good.
Everything seems very weird. So 3.2.0m only works on the desktop?!
Are you sure that you don't have some other old settings files on the
desktop that are causing it to work(!!)? Is the timing of opening X11
related? What happens if you delete AntConc, reboot, reinstall
AntConc, and then start X11 and AntConc?
This discussion group is good because I'm hoping this thread will
allow others to join in if they have the same problem. It seems to me
that X11 is still the problem but I need to check more. I think the
only way to establish the real problem is to create a version of
AntConc that outputs *all* errors to the Terminal or a file. I don't
usually do this because users are typically students/teachers in
classrooms who are not interested in error reports. But, clearly this
is something that we need right now.
I'll get back to you all shortly.
Laurence.
I've been looking into the problem of launching AntConc 3.2.2 on Mac
OS X. I have now made a revised version (AntConc 3.2.2.1m) which you
can try and download from the usual place:
http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software.html
Let me know if this launches properly. If it does, I think I may have
resolved the issue permanently.
Laurence.

Great news!
I'm really happy, but I must apologize for the very ugly interface
that AntConc has on OS X. You may be able to improve it a little by
changing the default font and size, but I really feel that I need to
create the native version, which can bypass the X11 mess altogether (a
bit like AntWordProfiler).
Let me know if you run into any other problems.
Laurence.

Try the new version (3.2.2.1) to see if this works. Emily has just
reported success with it.

The problem of character input was something that AntConc 3.2.2 was
supposed to address. Try using version 3.2.2.1 and see if that
resolves the problem. Again, this seems to be related to X11, but I'm
not sure.
By the way, I don't really like all the minor updates. I'll try and
get version 3.3 out as early as possible.
Laurence.
I'm so glad. But, I've already started work on a completely new
version of AntConc, written in a different computer language and
graphical toolkit. The result is a completely native, completely
modern tool. When it's finished it should be nice.
Laurence.
