Hello, Dr. Anthony.

I've just installed 3.2.2m on a new mac. X11 is installed and
running, but when I open Antconc, the program appears to open
(a light under the icon in the dock and the program menu appears
in the top bar), but no Antconc window opens and most menu options are
greyed out and unusable. I had this problem before but can't
remember the magic hidden step to get the program to actually
start. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks, and take care,

-Will

What version of OS X are you using?

Somebody emailed me directly about the exact same issue a few days
ago. I think the problem is almost certainly with X11. (Some users of
10.6 have already reported that it works fine.). Here are a few
questions:
1. Can you launch X11 yourself? (I think the answer is yes.)
2. What version of X11 you are using?
3. Have you tried installing an older version of X11 first, and then
launching AntConc? The link is on my page:
http://roundhere.net/journal/install-x11-on-mac-os-x-10-4-tiger-without-dvd/
4. Have you tried installing the older version of X11 first, and then
updating this through the software updater, and then, launching
AntConc?

I would very much like to resolve this problem, so let's try to sort this out.

Regards
Laurence.

Dear Laurence,

As you already know, I have been having the same problem installing
3.2.2m on my mac. To answer your questions:
1. I was able to launch X11.
2-3. I downloaded X11 1.1.3 from your website
http://roundhere.net/journal/install-x11-on-mac-os-x-10-4-tiger-without-dvd/
4. I downloaded Antconc after I downloaded X11
5. For your reference, my Mac version is 10.4.11

Thank you,
Ana

It's really strange because I use 10.4.11 on my own Mac. So, the
version shouldn't be the problem. Did you update X11 1.1.3 through
the software updater?

Here are a few more questions, as a way to track down the source of
the problem. For all the tests, make sure that you launch X11 first.
Also, make sure that you don't have some old settings file in the same
place as AntConc.

1) Try putting AntConc on the desktop and launching from there. Does
anything happen? (For example, does AntConc launch for a fraction of a
second and then die?)
2) Try putting AntConc in the same folder as X11 itself. This is
probably the applications folder but you may have moved it somewhere
else. Does anything happen?
3) Try downloading and launching the older version of AntConc (3.2.0m)
from here (http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software/antconc3.2.0m.zip).
Does anything happen?

I have confirmation from various people that they can run AntConc
3.2.0 and 3.2.2 on OS X 10.4.11 and later versions. So, I'm sure the
solution is simple.

Good luck with the tests!

Laurence.

Dear Laurence,

I did not have much luck at (1) putting AntConc on the desktop and
launching from there and (2) putting AntConc in the same folder as X11
itself. However, I have been successful launching the older version of
AntConc (3.2.0m). Now I am ready to figure out how it works!

Thank you very much for your prompt help,
Ana

Hi Ana,

This is very important news. AntConc 3.2.0 and 3.2.2 are essentially
the same. So, can you tell you me how you got 3.2.0m to work? Also,
what country are you in? (This might be important to determine the
language settings on your computer.)

Hi Laurence,

That's very interesting! I did not do anything special. The old version went straight to my desktop (as the new one did), but this time it just opened up with X11. I have just tried to open the new version one more time and it is still not cooperating. I am in the US, which should not be a problem, since I was able to download the program into my notebook. I will check with the tech person at my university and let you know when he gets back to me.

Thank you,
Ana

Hi Dr. Anthony,

Thanks for offering to help again, it's very much appreciated.

My mac is running OSX 10.6.7. On this computer, X11 is version
2.3.6 (XQuartz). I tried installing the older version of X11 using
the link you posted, but that version of X11 can only be installed
on OSX 10.4.

When I try to launch Antconc 3.2.2, it appears to launch just fine,
there's just no program window visible and no options available
on the dropdown menus.

Take care,

-Will

Dear Ann and Will,

Thank you for the reports.

Ann, you seem to have the clearest problem, i.e., AntConc 3.2.0u runs,
but AntConc 3.2.2 fails on your system (which is identical to mine!)

Do you know how to run AntConc from the Terminal? If you do, it will
allow us to see the errors that the program is producing. (Basically,
just navigate to the folder where the Application is stored, e.g, the
Desktop, and then type the name of the application.)

Can you try launching both programs (3.2.0u and 3.2.2u) and report
back what the Terminal reports? Of course, 3.2.0u shouldn't report
back any problems, but 3.2.2u might.

Will, perhaps you could do the same and we can see if the same error
is being produced.

Thank you both so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Laurence.

Dear Ann and Will,

Just to follow up on the previous post, there are a few things I've
noticed about AntConc 3.2.2m on OS X.

1) Even when you close AntConc by clicking on the red close button in
the window, the application still seems to be running. So, the next
time you "run" the application, nothing happens because the system
still thinks the previous version is running. (I need to fix this
bug). So, you need to quit the application from the menu bar.

I wonder if this might be the reason for Will's problem?

2) Launching AntConc 3.2.2m from the Terminal is not as easy as I
thought. The application has a space in the name "AntConc 3.2.2m" but
the Terminal window does not accept names with spaces in them. (So, to
run the application from the Terminal, first change the application
name to "AntConc3.2.2m" via the File>Get Info menu option. Then,
assuming that the application is on your desktop, open the Terminal
and type:

>open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app

This should launch the application. Remember that if you are on OS X
10.4.11, you need to start X11 before you type in the above command.

Here's a link to more information about the Terminal:
http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/29520-how-launch-application-terminal.html

I get no errors at all on my system, but I am hoping that your system
produces some!

By the way, check out AntWordProfiler 1.200m on my software page:
http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software.html

This runs natively in Mac OS X, so there is no need to mess about with
X11 at all. I'm hoping to recode AntConc to work in the same way.

Good luck.
Laurence.

Hi Laurence,

I'm excited to work with your program. It seems like it does a lot of
great things (and I'm particularly grateful that you can cut and paste
out of the program and into a spreadsheet!).

I'm afraid I'm having the same difficulties as Ann and Will, however.
I run OSX 10.5.8. When I ran AntConc 3.2.2m, I had the same trouble
described above. The program seems to be open (in the menu bar, blue
dot in the dock), but the window never appears and all of the options
in the menu bar are greyed out. The "red dot closing" isn't an
issue, because I never had a window open to be able to close it that
way. On the other hand, after seeing the above, I downloaded 3.2.0m
and that seems to work just fine.

When running the code above from the terminal (I typed "terminal into
spotlight, and then followed your directions above), the program did
not open, but the following appeared:
>open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app
-bash: Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app: is a directory
(Same output if I put AntConc3.2.0m in the open line instead)

Let me know if there's anything else I can try. I did not try
downloading an older version of X11 (I am currently running XQuartz
2.1.6), because I'm not entirely sure what that means! Any advice
would be most welcome.

Cheers,
em

Hi Em,

Thank you for the detailed explanation of what you have tried. The
more details that I get, the better I can find the source of the
problem. (I haven't heard back from Will or Ann, yet).

You wrote:
>>open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app
> -bash: Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app: is a directory
> (Same output if I put AntConc3.2.0m in the open line instead)

This is interesting. On my computer, after typing "open
Desktop/AntConc3.2.0m.app" or "open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app" I don't
get any output from the terminal and the application simply starts.
(This is the normal behavior.)

Can you confirm that you get the following output:

INPUT: >open Desktop/antconc3.2.0m.app
OUTPUT: >-bash: Desktop/antconc3.2.0m.app: is a directory
<With application starting>

INPUT: >open Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app
OUTPUT: >-bash: Desktop/AntConc3.2.2m.app: is a directory
<With no application starting>

The report "...is a directory" is strange. The system should see the
.app folder as an application and run it. I still think there is a
problem with X11, and there are quite a few reports on the Internet
about unpredictable behavior of X11 even with major products like
Matlab. For example,
http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-2ZRQO8/index.html?solution=1-2ZRQO8

But, I am hopeful that the problem can be solved. If you can confirm
the above, I will investigate the problem more here.

Sorry for the trouble!
Laurence.

Ah, no. I think I was entering it incorrectly before. I wrote
">open" when "open" alone was the right command.

So the actual behavior is that BOTH of the versions start up (as you
would expect). And there is no text at all in the terminal window in
response to the open command line.

The only difference is that antconc3.2.0m starts up and (eventually)
opens up a window (though it takes several seconds before the window
pops up); and AntConc3.2.2 starts up and DOES NOT open up a window.
So, 3.2.0m is usable, but 3.2.2m is not.

When AntConc3.2.2m is open (with no window) I can do the following:

Click "About AntConc 3.2.2m" in the menu bar, and the little about
window pops up. It closes normally.
Hide, Hide Others, and Quit AntConc3.2.2m are all available options,
and Show All appears as an available option when anything is
hidden. The all work as I imagine they should. However, clicking
Show All does NOT result in the main application window suddenly
appearing. (And I double checked that there is no window available
in one of the other desktop spaces; it's not anywhere!).

Under the File Menu, only Page Setup is available as an option. It
works as it should.
Under the Edit Menu, only Find, Spelling, and Special Characters are
available. Nothing is available within the Find sub-menu, though.
No options are available under the Window menu.

I also tried the keyboard shortcuts Command-N, and Command-O, neither
of which did anything.

I couldn't think of anything else to try!
I hope that helps. Sorry for the incorrect information before!

Best,
em

Dear Em,

That is a fantastically clear explanation. Thank you so much.

So, it means almost definitely that the problem is *not* with AntConc,
but with X11 itself. This
would also explain why there appears to be many people running AntConc
successfully in all versions of OS X... X11 is notoriously poorly
supported on
OS X, and each new version update (e.g., 10.4.8, 10.4.9, 10.4.10,
10.4.11 ...) introduces changes to the system that can create problems
for X11 to run
correctly.

Because I don't develop X11, my only option is to program AntConc so
that it doesn't access any of the problem aspects of X11. This is
going to be a little difficult
because the problem will be hard to identify. I'll go back through the
code and see what changes to X11 access were introduced between
AntConc 3.2.0 and 3.2.2.
Maybe that will give us the solution.

The other option, which is much better, is to simply stop using X11
altogether. X11 looks horrible on OS X and we now know that it is also
unstable. I should program AntConc
to run natively in OS X, as my other program AntWordProfiler does
(http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software.html#antwordprofiler).
Let me think about which route would actually be quicker.

Thank you again.
I'll update this thread when I introduced a solution.

Laurence.

Dear Dr. Anthony,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I really appreciate all the help.

I changed the name to remove the space like you suggested,
then tried running the program from the desktop using the
Terminal command. This time the AntConc 3.2.2m menu appeared
(with a space still in the name) in the top menu bar, but with
no blue dot under the icon in the dock, no window, and all the
menu options greyed out like before.

I installed 3.2.0 on the new mac but when I tried to open
it (through X11), it gave me a prompt saying I needed to install
Rosetta to run 3.2.0. I'll see if I can get that working later today,
but so far, no luck with OSX 10.6.7.

Thanks again,

Dear Will,

Thanks for the update! It's good to know that AntConc 3.2.0m seems to
run on most computers without problem. (It's still not as pretty as
AntWordProfiler, though).

What's Rosetta? I haven't heard of this.

I'm investigating the problem with AntConc 3.2.2m now. I'll probably
create a special version that outputs all errors on the user's machine
and then see if we can locate the problem there.

I'll get back to everyone shortly.

Hi Laurence,

Thanks for your help!

Just a wee update on interesting happenings. As I mentioned before
3.2.0m is working on my computer. But I cleaned off my desktop and
put the application file into a new folder (with my texts to
analyze). The next time I tried starting 3.2.0m, it wouldn't! (I
did start X11 first). I could double click on the file, OR click on
it in the dock and it would do the beginning signs of opening (icon
jumping in the dock with a little blue light under it; or that
expanding icon when you double click), but then it would simply stop
and not open. When I moved the 3.2.0m icon back to the desktop, it
started just like it did before with no trouble. So, I'm not sure
what all that is about, but I thought I would let you know! Desktop,
yes, but other places, no!

(Just to cover all the bases, 3.2.2.m still doesn't open a window,
even if it's on the desktop!)

Cheers,
Emily

p.s. loving 3.2.0m! Thanks!

Hi Emily,

Great update! Thank you so much. But for me, the news is not good.
Everything seems very weird. So 3.2.0m only works on the desktop?!

Are you sure that you don't have some other old settings files on the
desktop that are causing it to work(!!)? Is the timing of opening X11
related? What happens if you delete AntConc, reboot, reinstall
AntConc, and then start X11 and AntConc?

This discussion group is good because I'm hoping this thread will
allow others to join in if they have the same problem. It seems to me
that X11 is still the problem but I need to check more. I think the
only way to establish the real problem is to create a version of
AntConc that outputs *all* errors to the Terminal or a file. I don't
usually do this because users are typically students/teachers in
classrooms who are not interested in error reports. But, clearly this
is something that we need right now.

I'll get back to you all shortly.
Laurence.

Hi,

I tried the deleting and reinstalling. This time I put 3.2.0m
directly into the applications folder instead of putting it on the
desktop and moving it around. It seems to be working fine from the
dock now. Maybe some strange thing happened where X11 was looking
for it where it was first opened or something? There definitely
wasn't anything visible on my desktop that had anything to do with
antconc, though, so I don't think it was that. (Also, I didn't
reboot before re-downloading and re-installing, though I did delete
the old version first...I was lazy, and it seems to have not change
things...just in case that extra info is helpful).

In any case, it seems to be just fine now, so I'll leave it in the
applications folder (where it probably belongs, anyway!)

Thanks!

Hallo,
thank you for this great software and for the instructions in this
thread.
Just to let you know that I had the same problems as Emily:
I am running OSX 10.6.7 (menus in English), with X11 version XQuartz
2.3.6 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple56),
I downloaded AntConc3.2.2m, but it doesn't work: shows up in dock,
menus appear, but no window opens up and most menu options are grayed
out, exactly as in Emily's case. Nothing happens neither when I double
click the application icon in the folder where it was downloaded, nor
if I move the application to the desktop or to the applications
folder, nor if I launch it from Terminal. I would be happy to try a
version which outputs all errors to a file, if it can help in finding
where the problem is.

After reading this thread, I downloaded AntConc3.2.0m and its window
opened up fine, both when double-clicking the application in the
downloads folder and also when double-clicking it after having moved
it to the application folder. It seems to work fine, except for
a problem with character codes: the search term box accepts characters
such as čšž (Latin-1 supplement in Unicode, used for writing
Slovenian) and makes a nice concordance from a UTF-8 encoded text, but
I am not able to input Japanese characters into the search box,
neither by typing them in nor by pasting them from the clipboard. Is
this a known issue or should I start another thread?
Thank you very much again for all your work.

Kristina

Hi All,

I've been looking into the problem of launching AntConc 3.2.2 on Mac
OS X. I have now made a revised version (AntConc 3.2.2.1m) which you
can try and download from the usual place:
http://www.antlab.sci.waseda.ac.jp/software.html

Let me know if this launches properly. If it does, I think I may have
resolved the issue permanently.

Hey!

It opened up right away with no trouble at all! Fantastic!

I'm going to start playing around with it right away, and I'll let you
know how it goes.

And thank you so much! I've never seen any program developer who is
so phenomenally helpful!!!

Best,

Just did a quick run through the basic functions on a single file.
Everything works great from what I can see!

Thank you so very very much!

Great news!

I'm really happy, but I must apologize for the very ugly interface
that AntConc has on OS X. You may be able to improve it a little by
changing the default font and size, but I really feel that I need to
create the native version, which can bypass the X11 mess altogether (a
bit like AntWordProfiler).

Let me know if you run into any other problems.

Laurence.

Try the new version (3.2.2.1) to see if this works. Emily has just
reported success with it.

The problem of character input was something that AntConc 3.2.2 was
supposed to address. Try using version 3.2.2.1 and see if that
resolves the problem. Again, this seems to be related to X11, but I'm
not sure.

By the way, I don't really like all the minor updates. I'll try and
get version 3.3 out as early as possible.

Laurence.

Hi Laurence,

I just downloaded 3.2.2.1m and installed it on a mac
running OSX 10.6.7, and it opened right away in X11 with
no problems. Thanks very much for the fix.

Excellent news!

I'm so glad. But, I've already started work on a completely new
version of AntConc, written in a different computer language and
graphical toolkit. The result is a completely native, completely
modern tool. When it's finished it should be nice.

Laurence.
