Dear Prof. Anthony,
Thank you very much for your prompt and thorough reply for my previous enquiry regarding Arabic Language. I was just wondering whether it is possible to change the P value when generating the Keyword list. I know that Antconc allows the users to select a particular statistical test ( i.e. the Chi-squared or log-likelihood test). I am still not professional in using corpus software but what I know is that the P value (a number between 0 and 1) is used to indicate the amount of confidence that we have that a word is key due to chance alone. Because every word in the two corpora is assigned a P value, can I decide how low the P value needs to be before I can label a word as key?

I mean that if we were to take a p value of 0.05 as the cut-off point in determining whether a word was key or not, we might find some words that occur let’s say 10 times in one corpus and 0 times in another classed as a key.

I really don’t know what the default P value  in Antconc is and if it is 0.05, can we specify lower P value to be less that 0.000001 , for example, if possible?

The question could be silly, but ,as I said before, I have just recently begun using corpus software?

Regards,

Ahmad

Dear Ahmad,

For keywords, AntConc produces either Log-Likelihood or Chi-squared keyness values. If you know what significance level you require (e.g. p < 0.05), you just need to know what the keyness value is for that level and then select words with keyness values above that level. Scroll to the bottom of the following link for some common ones (they apply to both Log-Likelihood and Chi-Squared):

Laurence.
