Hi,

I've recently tried to run AntConc on my new Windows 10 tab book, but after trying four or five different versions of AntConc, including 3.5.0 and 3.5.0 64 bit Dev versions, I haven't found out a solution yet.

Windows 10 Pro
version 1607
processor Intel i7
RAM 16
system  64bit, based on x64 processor

When I double click the program, I don't get any response.

I am wondering if there is any known issues with Windows 10 which I still cannot find from my internet search, or if it is a problem with my computer.

I'd appreciate any suggestion that may help me solve my problem.

Jae

Hi,

I run AntConc on Windows 10 without any problem. Can you try putting AntConc at the root of C drive? Maybe the path on your Korean system is the problem. The other potential issue is some security setting that you have applied that prevents Windows 10 running any apps not downloaded from the Microsoft App Store.

Let me know you what you find.

Regards,

Laurence.

Maybe too simple, but remember that it does not 'install'.  It just opens.

Maybe try putting it on the Desktop?  Or in a folder by itself?

Thanks, Laurence, for your reply.

>> Can you try putting AntConc at the root of C drive? Maybe the path on your Korean system is the problem.

I've tested it, but to no avaible.

I am new to Windows 10, and have yet to figure out how to play with the setting, but sure, I will try that.

Best,

Jae

Hi again,

I want to get this resolved. One or two people have reported problems on Windows 10, but I can't replicate it here. (Windows builds are usually rock solid, so this is very unusual).

>after trying four or five different versions of AntConc, including 3.5.0 and 3.5.0 64 bit Dev versions

To test things, always just go with the standard version. Even on 64-bit machines, the standard version will work fine. But, on 32 bit systems, the 64-bit version will die. Using the standard version, just keeps things simple.

For issues like yours, you only ever need to consider the release version: 3.4.4. If that is not working, it's a very serious issue that I need to resolve immediately. The Dev version is only for new features.

So, can you confirm the following:

OS: Windows 10 (Pro or Home)?
AntConc: Version 3.4.4
Issue: Does not start on double clicking.

Is that right?

Laurence.

This is a followup to my previous reply.  Still in the dark.

>>>> The other potential issue is some security setting that you have applied that prevents Windows 10 running any apps not downloaded from the Microsoft App Store.

I found out how to change the Windows smartscreen setting, and have made it sure that it is set to "Warning mode" rather than to "Blocking? mode".
I also figured out that one can manipulate the compatibility mode of an exe file by opening its file properties--I made sure to set the compatibility mode to Windows 7.
I've tried "tablet mode" either 'on' or 'off'.
I've downloaded the recent versions of ActivePerl and Notepad++, which work just fine.

I've downloaded AntPConc, but the same  issue persists.  After a brief 'wait' icon, nothing happens.

Cheers,

Jae

AntConc: Version 3.4.4
Issue: Does not start on double clicking.

Windows 10 Pro, and yes, "Does not start on double clicking"
I've downloaded 3.4.4 again and tried to run it, but failed.

Hi,

Just checked again. AntConc 3.4.4 works fine on Windows 10 Pro here.

Try the following.

1) Create an *empty* folder on your desktop called "test"
3) Put the AntConc.exe in the "test" folder
4) Double click to start

Laurence.

Laurence,

Followed your instructions step by step.  No success.

I've also done the same in the folder D:\antconc, just in case my desktop path name may contain any non-english font, but again no success.

Jae,

Would an Anti-virus program, or a blocking App, be preventing the file from opening?

Also, I found this:

And this:

On the 2nd item, look for an entry at the bottom of the page labeled "Mo Ja replied on
That user said WIN10 did not like having programs on D drive; prefers C drive.  He says, "It seems that Windows 10 doesn't like it at all (it causes updates to end bad too)."  Could that be the problem?

Hi,

Do you have an Anti-Virus program running? If so, which one? That may be the issue. I suggest turning it off for 10 min and trying to see if AntConc will run.

That's a good place to start. I never though about that. I use Microsoft Essentials and never have an issue.

Laurence.

Hi, Judy.

Thanks a lot!

I've checked the programs in C:\antconc as well already.

Your link suggests changing registry, which I am slightly reluctant to follow immediately, since my new computer is working well otherwise and I am not quite sure if it is the registry problem.  Antconc is one of the single file standalone programs, and I wonder if even they are dependent on the registry composition.
But sure if things do not get solved for a while, I would try registry change as well.

As for the anti-virus program, which is Ahnlab's V3 Lite in my case, I turned it off for about 10 minutes as Laurence has suggested, but no difference.

Anyway, I very much appreciate your efforts to help me out.

Cheers,
Jae

Hi, Laurence,

My virus program is Ahnlab's V3 Lite, which I turned off for a while with internet disconnected but I don't get any better results.
By the way, I use the same V3 program in my Windows 7 system, where AntConc runs without a hitch.

Thanks,

Jae

I, too, am hesitant to mess with registry items--I only did it once with an expert guiding my every step, and I still was in a panic the whole time.  LOL

Sorry those ideas did not help.  I can't think of anything else it could be.  The Properties are set correctly on the file?  It is associated correctly to what opens exe files?

Hi,

AntConc doesn't touch the registry so there is never a need to adjust things there. The problem is somewhere else.

Jae-Woong Choe, can you open a command line interface in the test folder where AntConc is located and start AntConc from the command line (just type AntConc.exe). If there are errors they might get reported there. If not, I'll send you a custom version that will show all errors occurring. I want to solve this problem if I can.

Laurence.

I've already tried it several times, hoping that I may get some error messages.  But no messages, simply giving out a new prompt.
I was going to ask you if there is a way to get the error message at all, so I'd appreciate it much if you can send one.

Cheers,

Jae

I have checked the file compatibility setting over and over again, with different versions and in different folders, but still no luck.

Thanks a lot again for your time and kindness.

One more test I have done with my tab book:
I ran one of my little utility .exe files on my tab book without any problem.
So that means Perl based exe file runs ok in my machine.  By the way the program was compiled with PerlApp 9.5.1, which I use to turn a .pl to an .exe.
The utility program is purely text based without any graphical interface.

Then one source of the problem that comes to my mind is perhaps there is some conflict with the graphical user interface part of AntConc and the display setting of my tab book, which is Surface Pro 4, with a very high resolution display capabilities (2736-1824).
Currently it is set at 1920-1080 for compatibility reasons with a web site I have to access.

I tried changing display resolution to some lower settings, but still no luck with AntConc.

Have you tried AntConc on a 'normal' Windows 10 machine?

Laurence,
I am not a fan of Windows 10 upgrade,... yet, but I had to buy a tab book, Surface Pro 4,  three month ago and it came with Windows 10.  So no way to escape, and I am using it minimally for now.

The only compatibility issue I've experienced is with a lecture recording school webpage where the recording is based on something called Xinics.  It was soon resolved with some help from people at school.  Other than that, I haven't had any other problem for a couple of month, but then again I am using it only for lecture recording or web access.  It was only when I tried to use AntConc briefly as part of my lecture that I noticed it won't start on my tab book.   My main computers at school and at home are Windows 7.

I realize I should have mentioned it sooner but initially I thought the issue was related to Windows 10 rather than my particular PC.  Sorry about that.  I heard some people around me saying that the experiment program called OpenSesame runs into some unknown and seemingly erratic problems when run on Windows 10. That's about it.

Best,
Jae

Hello,

The presumed "compatibility" trouble I have had reported above has been solved, and in case anybody out there is having a similar problem as mine, here is a brief report:
It took Laurence and me some 26 messages back and forth and two hour meeting in person to locate the problem.  It turns out the problem was quite simple.  The user name of my account on my pc was in Korean, which was again used in automatically creating a user folder where personal and/or temporary files are kept.
AntConc is a standalone program and does not require a separate installation process, but when it runs, it creates on the run some temporary files which the Windows system saves in some folder.  Apparently the Korean fonts in its path caused all the trouble.
So the solution would be either to change the name of the account including the related folder names, which seems a bit tricky once the computer is initially set up, or to create a new account (preferably making it an administrator account) without any 'foreign' characters--just clean ascii characters, no spaces or symbols--and then run AntConc after logging in that account.  I tried the second option a moment ago, and AntConc now runs on my Surface Pro 4.

I would like to add that I truly appreciate Laurence for all his time and trouble to help me out and find the solution.

Best

Jae
