Hi,

while using AntClawsGUI I have run into a problem and since I have yet to find a solution, I thought I might ask the authorities on the subject. A couple of weeks ago I tried to tag a corpus that consists of .trn-files using AntClaws. Out of 60 files, the software managed to tag two. Then it stopped and an error message popped up telling me that AntClawsGUI failed to find the winclaws.exe and asking me to check if they were in the same directory.
Naturally, my first reaction was to check if - for some unknown reason - winclaws.exe had been removed from its original directory. It hadn't. So I thought to myself: Maybe it's a one-time-glitch and I just need to retry. However, on the second try I got the exact same error message.
At that point, I considered that the software might have malfunctioned to a more severe extent. So I rebooted my computer and tried again - unsuccessfully. Eventually, this problem led to me reinstalling the CLAWS tagger and downloading the newest AntClawsGUI.

The error keeps popping up. Whenever I try to tag a corpus file in another data format, it works just fine.

Is the tagger generally incompatible with .trn files, and why then does it display this kind of error message?

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Felix

Hi Felix,

The error is a bit misleading. It seems that the CLAWS engine is dying for some reason. The AntClawsGUI interface suddenly loses access to the engine and thinks it's not there. So, the solution is to run the CLAWS engine directly and find out what is causing the error. CLAWS is quite fragile when it comes to file formats so I suspect the problem is in the format.

By the way, if you just want to part-of-speech tag your data, my TagAnt tool might be useful. It has no dependencies and runs the TreeTagger engine inside. This is another very popular tagging engine.

Regards,

Laurence.

Hi Laurence,

it's great to receive an answer from you in person. After checking, I can confirm that the CLAWS-Tagger is incapable of handling .trn files. In my case, it does not immediately shut down when I try to tag .trn-files but it freezes, which, I guess, amounts to pretty much the same thing in the end. And it probably explains why AntClaws loses track of the tagger.

Also, thanks for suggesting that I use TagAnt - I will definitely give that a try, and recommend it to my students!

best regards,

Felix
