Hello,

we are trying to calculate negative keywords in a target corpus, however, were are not sure what we should look for in the output to identify the negative keywords (as they appear not to be clearly marked).

Are the keywords extracted with the ‘show negative keywords’ option flagged all negative, or is there something we are missing?

By running the analysis using Dice as an effect size measure, we do not get any negative results (the lowest keyness effect is 0), this changes if we use MI or M2, in which case we do get positive and negative effect sizes in the output.

Thank you very much,

Valeria, Silvia and Sara

Hi Valeria,

Sorry for the slow reply. I've been away supposedly on holiday (but actually I was just coding a new version of AntConc).

To answer your question, yes, when you choose the "Show negative keywords" option (in AntConc 4x), all the keywords shown are negative.

Laurence.

Respected sir,

Can you tell more what is negative keyword and for what purpose can we use this feature?  I heard about it first time and I am interested to know about it. Thanks.

Regards,

Nadia.

Nadia,

A normal keyword is a word that appears unusually frequently in the target corpus compared against the reference corpus. A negative keyword is the opposite: a word that appears unusually frequently in the reference corpus compared against the target corpus.

I hope that helps.

Laurence.

Dear prof. Anthony,

thank you very much for the response! I've seen the new release, which I will check out as soon as I'm back from a conference.

Best wishes for the new year,
Valeria
