Hi everyone!
Hi everyone!

I'm currently writing my corpus linguistics related Master's thesis and am looking at neologisms from the past (early 2000s). I have a few neologisms that include numbers (i.e. Y2K, year 2000). Unfortunately every time I enter these there's an error message saying that these expressions are not in my corpus. But I know they are.

I have tried the following search terms:
  • y2k
  • y*k (had many hits, mostly "York", but never Y2K)
  • Y 2 K
None of them have worked.
Is there a way you can search for expressions that include numbers?

Many thanks!

Hi,

With the default settings, when you build a corpus, numbers are not included in the token definition. This means that they are treated like white space. So to search for "y2k" you would need to search for "y k". As numbers are important in your research, I suggest you rebuild your corpus in the AntConc corpus manager, editing the token definition to include numbers. If you do this, then you can search for "y2k" and it will work as expected.

I hope that helps!

Laurence.
