Hello,

I recently learned of the TagAnt software, and was glad to have such a simple tagging option for basic queries. I have been successful at extracting searches for tags (e.g., *_NN). However, when I have tried to search for a tag, and then include a context item--either another tag type or a specific word--the search yields not hits.

An example:

If I want to identify how certain singular nouns are followed by to vs. of vs. with, etc., I'd want to enter *_NN for my search term, and then as context words I'd enter a tag list such as  *_RP, *_TO, and maybe *_IN and *_IN/that. I can see that in the corpus there are instances of problem of or difficulty with, but they're not showing up.

Any advice?

Thanks!
Brian

*I forgot to say that in some instances there are 0 hits, and in other cases I get the message, "The entry is not a valid word!"

Hi Brian,

The first thing to do is adjust the token definition to include the tags. To do this, just activate all the different options (e.g. numbers, punctuation, etc.). Then, you should be able to search for words with tags just as you did before.

Note also that the cluster tool can be great for things like this.

I hope that helps.

Laurence.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I am still getting zero hits whenever I have a context item, be it a word or tag. I can search *_NN, but if I add context items (tags or words), I get zero hits after a search lasting about 12 seconds. Is there something else I am not activating/deactivating?

Thanks,
Brian

Hello,

I still have been unable to resolve the issue originally posted in this thread. To recap, I am able to search for a tag in my tagged corpus, but I cannot search for a tag and another tag as a context item. I get zero hits.

I have done the following attempting to remedy it:

* Global Settings: Checked the boxes for Letter Token Clauses, Number Token Classes, Punctuation Token Classes, Symbol Token Classes, Mark Token Classes.
* Re-checked my tagged files

I still end up with zero hits. In this example, for my query I selected "Advanced," and entered a list of all the verb types in the ConcAnt tagset (I think 24 tag types). I checked "use context words" and entered three tags to occur within a span of 4 words to the right (zero to left): *_IN, *_RB, and *_RP. In the advanced search window, the Search Term "words" was checked, but not "case" or "regex".

Thanks for your help!

Hi Brian,

I realize the problem now. When you talked about "context" you were referring to the Advanced search options.

Unfortunately, the advanced context search does not (currently) accept wildcards in the way you are trying. To do what you want, you'll need to use the standard search window and the "zero or one word" wildcard @

So, try this:

*_IN@@@the_DT@@@*_IN

You can use the | wildcard to combine multiple searches, or just list them up in the advanced search at the top as a file-list search.

I hope that helps!

Laurence.
