Dear Professor Anthony,

Hello,

I am a university lecturer who teach Korean language education in Korea. I'd like to download AntConc program and use it for corpus analysis, but I'm having trouble. My computer is window10 and 64 bit system, so I downloaded 3.5.8 version window 64 bit. Icons are also created, but there is no response to double-clicking. I'd appreciate your help for why.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours,

Lee Hyekyung

Hi Lee Hyekyung,

I suspect the problem is with your antivirus program or the security settings of your system (or perhaps you are using your Korean name as your username and the hangul characters are causing path problems). I suggest trying the following (one at a time in a cumulative fashion):

1) Temporarily disable any 3rd party antivirus tools (especially the notorious Norton Antivirus and McAfee Antivirus tools that tend to generate many false positives) and then launch AntConc
2) Try launching AntConc from the root of your c drive
3) Try changing your user account name to a name with only English characters (no Hangul characters)

Could you report back here what happens?

Thanks!

Laurence.

Dear Professor Anthony,

Hello,

As you told me, I did everything in order, but the application isn't running again. Is there any other way?

Thank you.

I'm Korean and I struggled the AntConc software.
In my case, I changed all my Windows directory names and file names into English as well as transforming all the texts into UTF-8 format texts.

To. seung-yun Lee

Thank you for your answers. I'm glad you're Korean. I'm sorry for asking such a basic question because I've never used such a program before.
Do I need to rename all files on my computer in English? And what does the UTF-8 format text mean?

Thank you.

Dear All,

If AntConc is not launching, the problem is unrelated to your corpus file names of the UTF-8 encoding.

I suspect the problem is related to your Windows security setting or your antivirus software.

I suggest you try using a completely different computer (preferably from somebody else's account). Start the computer, download AntConc and see if it launches. If it does, you can confirm that the problem is with your computer and not AntConc itself.

AntConc is used throughout Korea so I suspect the problem is related to a unique setting on your computer.

I hope that helps.

Laurence.

Hi Lee Hyekyung,

Have you tried running it as an administrator?  Instead of double-clicking on the icon, right-click on it and choose "Run as administrator".  I don't know if this will help you with your specific problem or not but it fixed it for me when I had a similar problem in the past (though I can't really say why :-) ).

Good luck with it.

Take care,
Dax

Thanks Dax.

That's a great suggestion! Lee, please try this and let us all know if it works.

Laurence.

Finally, I succeeded with your help.^^
I downloaded it from an old desktop computer and changed the name of the computer and local disk (C:) from Korean to English.
Thank you all.

I tried as you told me and the program is running well.

First, I downloaded it to the computer's c folder using an old browser with weak security. All paths have been changed to English. The program is running well after double-clicking.
In addition, When Korean input text of corpus, need to use the default UTF-8 instead of Korean in global settings.

Thank you all for letting me know.^^

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I don't think using an old browser with weak security is anything to do with it. I suspect the main solution is simply avoiding Hangul in the path name.

Laurence.

Hi, Everyone.

I want to search the frequency of what word classes come at the end of the sentence in Korean.
Is there a way to search for the words that come at the end of the sentences?

Thank you.

Hi  Lee Hyekyung,

If you want to search for word classes come at the end of the sentence, you'll need to first POS tag your data. Once you do this. it would be trivial to search for two word clusters with the sentence end being the second 'word'. In English, the search would be something like:

*_* *_SENT

You could then take the results and process the first words to get the list that you need.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Laurence.
