Hi, respected sir and everyone,

I have a question if anyone can guide me regarding this confusion.

If we are not using the hypothesis can we say that it is corpus based study?
Or
Is hypothesis mendatory for corpus based studies?

Can we use the tagged data in corpus driven or not? Is their any possibility or example someone has used it in driven. According to my understanding "we can't use it in driven". Kindly confirm it. Thanks and regards.

Nadia

Dear Nadia,

Your questions seems to be quite general and not really related to AntConc, which is the focus of this discussion group. I'll answer you questions here, but please try to keep you future questions in line with the aim of the discussion group.

>If we are not using the hypothesis can we say that it is corpus based study?

These two concepts are unrelated. We can have corpus-based studies that use a hypothesis and others that don't, and we can have studies that use or don't use a hypothesis with or without a corpus.

>Is hypothesis mandatory for corpus based studies?

As I explain above, the answer to this is "no".

>Can we use the tagged data in corpus driven or not?
> Is there any possibility or example someone has used it in driven. According to my understanding "we can't use it in driven". Kindly confirm it.

This is a more difficult question to answer. Traditionally, "corpus driven" was assumed to not be based on any preconceived language model so tagged data was generally not used. But, these days, I don't think researchers draw such a clear line between "corpus-based" and "corpus-driven". I would probably recommend
that you move away from these terms and simply focus on forming a good research question that you can answer with a corpus. It is quite unimportant if somebody would label such a study as "corpus based" or "corpus driven".

I hope that helps!

Laurence.
