Hi, professor Anthony,

I am a PhD student from VUW. When I am doing my PhD program I am having a technical problem in using Antconc 4. I want to combine the two searching function together: Search Query list and Search V* (the application of POS for search verb items) together. This is because I made a search list of verb with wildcard, since there are reflective forms of verbs (s, ed, ing, ect.). While this bring up a new problem that the results also include some non-verb items (most are noun). Thus, I want to use the POS function of V* to filter out those items. While I tried it many times, and I didnt find any way to realize it. Would you please show me how to do it if Antconc can do it? Or what are your suggestions for me to just realize what I want ?

in addition, I find Antconc 4 cannot hide the tags too. I hope this can be improved as I like the clean interface of Antconc 4 so much.

Hi,

Just to confirm the problem, were you able to search for V* successfully in the normal search query box?

Laurence.

Yes. When I search the tagged txts by inputting V*, it comes with the verb_VV, verb_VVP, verb_VVD, to name a few. All the concordance lines come with taggs.

And I tried another version of Antconc 3.5.9, I can search the tagged text with different commads.  By inputting *_V*, I can get all the concordance lines with verbs. And the tags can be hidden by applying function: Hide tags (search in Conc/Plot/FIle View). By press Enter, it comes with text without taggs and by press Ctr + Enter, it comes with concordance lines with tags.

Hi Helios,

>I want to combine the two searching function together: Search Query list and Search V* (the application of POS for search verb items) together.

If you can search for V* successfully in the normal query search box, what exactly is the problem you are having? Perhaps you need to confirm what you mean by "Search Query list".

>While this bring up a new problem that the results also include some non-verb items (most are noun).

If you can search for V* successfully in the normal query search box, when/where do the searches produce results with non-verb items?

The more clearly and accurately you can describe your problem, the easier it will be for me to suggest an answer.

Regards,

Laurence.

Thanks Anthony.

Yeah, let me describe what I did. Right now I developed a list of verbs. But these verbs don't include different forms of the oringial verb. Thus I used wildcard * to cover different forms of these verbs:
deepen*
define*
demonstrate*
describe*
deserve*
desire*
...
I do this, I just need to uploade the searching list via Search Qery list. Then I got the results which also include some noun forms, like dependent, demonstration. These nouns are not what I want. Thus I am think whether I can apply another functon of POS to filter out those non-verb item. Thus, I will just get the verbs I want. This is what I described: Search Query list and Search V* (the application of POS for search verb items) together.

Or I will mannually give different forms of each verb. It's time consuming.

Hi again,

Can you confirm that you data is tagged. If so, have you tried searching for:
deepen*_V*
...

Laurence.

Yes, it works on Antconc 3.3.9 when I search for assess*_V*. On Antcon 4.2.0 it did't work and shows: No hits found. While on 4.2.0 I search V*, I can get all verbs?  Actually, I tend to use 4.2.0 as I can copy the corcordance line more easily to word document to do analysis.

It seems the 4.2.0 cannot hidden the tags too, as I mentioned earlier.

Hi,

It seems that you haven't loaded the tagged data using the "simple_word_tag_headword indexer" in the corpus manager.

Load your corpus via the Corpus Manager, using the indexer above. Then, everything should work smoothly. Everything is explained in the help file.

Regards,

Laurence.
