my AntConc 4.3.1. which worked fine in Mac Os Sequoia stopped working with the OS 15.4 update. Some older versions, in particular 423, work instead. Is this only my problem?

Hi Marco,

This is a big surprise to me. I would have thought there would be no problem as software is supposed to work smoothly with newer updates to MacOS.

Can you provide the following information:

1) Did you try reinstalling AntConc *after* the OS update?
2) What machine are you using (e.g. MacBook Pro)?
3) What architecture are you using (e.g. M1 vs Intel)

Regards,

Laurence.

Hi Laurence

1) Yes, I reinstalled AntCon several times

2) I'm currently travelling and using a MacBook Air 15 M3. Fortunately I have not yet upgraded my main MacBook Pro 14 m4 and 16 M2.
I don't know if these machines will also have the same problem but I don't want to risk it.

3) I have all Mac Silicon: Macbook Pro 16" M2; MacBook Air 15" M3; Macbook Pro 14" M4.

best regards

marco

Thanks!

One more question. What is the primary language set to?

I can run a test on a completely clean version of the OS and see what happens. But, it actually sounds like the update to the OS might include a bug that is breaking software (not just AntConc).

Unfortunately, MacOS has terrible backwards compatibility, so if I build for this new OS, AntConc will probably break on all previous versions of the OS.

I'll investigate this further.

Hi,

I've now confirmed that MacOS 15.4 is causing AntConc to crash. The update seems to prevent an important Python package (Numpy) from loading properly. This is a universal problem that will cause *all* Python programs that rely on Numpy to break. As Numpy is one of the most common libraries used in Python, this is going to affect thousands of applications. You can read a little more about it here:

The solution might be to update Numpy to the latest version and then rebuild AntConc. Hopefully, this would address the problem with MacOS 15.4. Alternatively, Apple might release a new update to MacOS 15.4 that allows existing apps to continue working properly. If anybody else has any experiences with AntConc (or other software) breaking on MacOS 15.4, please let us all know. I'll investigate this further, but I won't be able to make an immediate fix as it is not really a problem with AntConc, but with MacOS itself.

Laurence.

Hi again,

I've now added a warning on the AntConc page about updating to MacOS 15.4.

Laurence.

Yes, I asked chatgpt to analyze the problem and read the OS terminal results and it looks like it is indeed a problem with numpy
