Backslashes in reference sections

Before I dig deeper, I'm curious if anyone knows why five or six reference sections have numerous backslashes in the fields.

The auditing trail will show me who did it, but not why. :) If someone with knowledge of this could drop me a note, it would be appreciated.

It turns out that this situation was iatrogenic*.

*a sickness caused by the doctor; i.e., me.
