Role specific file selection

How in a playbook would i select a file based on which group of servers is being used.

I.e I have 3 different logstash config files which are completely different but similar groups of servers need the same file. So a template is not suited but i have the 3 files and multiple different groups of servers use the same file.

I.e default should be file 1, indexer group should have file 2, and the elasticsearch servers should have file 3.
