group_vars subdirectories

Folks! Sorry to bring this up again. .. .

I'd like to group my group vars by environment,e.g.:

dev/

web

all

stage/

web

all

prod/

web

all

Can someone please explain or point me to a doc for the rules on this? Or am i misremembering, and there's no good way to do this?
