Assalamu alaikum,
Thanks for the article ... quite interesting. The Tuareg tribe have a maternalistic culture quite similar to the Akans.
However I find the title and framing of the culture of the tribe in relation to Islam quite misleading and disturbing.
The following statement seems to give the impression that in Islam when there is a divorce, women are not allowed to keep their property "Women are allowed to have multiple sexual partners outside of marriage, keep all their property on divorce..."
Secondly and even more disturbing is the description of the culture as "progressive" by virtue of the fact that a woman is allowed to have multiple partners outside marriage. "...the Tuareg tribe of the Sahara is a culture
so progressive it would even make some in liberal western cultures
blush. Women are allowed to have multiple sexual partners outside of
marriage..." The writer is clearly interpreting the permissive culture through western neo-liberal lenses. I would have expected a more critical approach looking not only at how people in the West would view this culture, but also how the tribe reconciles its practices with Islam. That would have made the story more enriched.
The title seems to give the impression that it is mandatory for women to cover their faces in Islam, constrary to the fact. Covering the face with niqab is not mandatory in Islam.
