Sue suggested Venice as the city is an actual floating city that floats on the river of the grand canal. He liked the concept of the floating houses and the old architecture along with the intricate bridges that have a lot of detail. His concept was that we could create boats and barges on the water that is relatively static and has a slow current. This would be the two different components to animate and both are fairly advanced making the decision to not pursue it and as it would be to complex as not everyone in the group is comfortable with Maya.

At this point we tried to think of unique or original ideas that no one else had used in the class for their floating city. We collectively liked the mountainous regions of Switzerland that could make up the backdrop of our scene if we choice as our model. We especially liked the colours as they complemented one, this would also look great in the reflection of the lake as it would mirror the refection and could distort it at the banks and could be still at the centre . The architecture used here is very wooden and the roofs for the building could be reused along with having the same textures. This would mean we could have reuse components that we model saving time if we where to choice this as our model.

This was my choice from the list of other cities that we looked at and i choose Rome and ultimately settled on the Foro Romano as i have always been a fan and a history fanatic about the ancient roman empire and the gladiatorial games . I really wanted to do the Foro Romano as a aspect of the city of Rome but i wanted to do a restoration of it instead of a modern recreation as it would only be a series of buildings lying in ruins and a lot of rubble.

I really liked the use of pillars and the architecture along with the different structures and buildings with significance and there purpose which i thought we could convey in our work if we where to choose this.

We looked at the different building and the design and thought of ways to shoe the visuals in a unique way and we liked the change of the design from when it was first introduced and was a communist style buildings and the smoke stacks that bellowed smoke. It was then still used and developed more and the building added onto and maintained up until the demand for coal was in decline and the island was abandoned. The centre of the islands mountain decreased in size over time and was built on later on.

Looked at style of design of buildings the use of camera angle and how recreate a real life location and convey it animated format where the buildings and designs are more streamlined basic and the colours and texture and how they should be applied it help us look as the focus points and makes it recognisable that the scene is set in the video is San Francisco. It helped us look at suitably without having to out right state where the location is or where the video is set.

Mines: This was my idea which Dom and I then adapted and drew this into our designs which we worked with several concepts to create the scene. WE looked at possible sequences that we could animate her and thought of moving the mine cart , it could have two sets of tracks for two karts one would carry coal up to the surface and the other would come back down empty.

Examples or styles we researched at the early stages of the project and we looked into films and ways to present or convey our work and animations by using camera angles, colour and lighting for our city and how to do it:

Valerian and the city of a thousand planets: This was good and shows how CGI and visual effects can work and how much you can populate a scene with but in my opinion it was a bit of an eyesore as there is to much happening on screen and there is no main focus point disorientating audiences. WE really wanted to stay away from this and make our work and video show that it follows a path or sequence that works not just jumping from one scene to the next but to follow a path that the camera can convey the surrounding with ample time and pacing.

Merging of two types of culture and architecture leading to San Fransokyo and making it work as a hybridisation of culture. We discussed this as a possibility but it would prove to difficult to create as we agreed that the builds we would ty and make would be as low poly count as possible

The buildings we created had no proper reference images for proportion layout, and size. We had to make the dimensions up along with assuming design on the other buildings face design etc. This lead to more research being conducted and analysis the source images we gather from the air or from the sea along with the google street view.

We at other models and miniature sculptures while still adding our twist reworking it. We generated the models as we thought would suit the tone of the scene they would be similar and where not just a replica we had our own varying designs for old and new architecture styles from the communist era and a revitalisation of buildings in the city.

We planned for a group critique to help analysis our work ethic and progression with a set timescale. In the meetings we discussed methods to improve increasing work quality, making us a more effective team.

Textures research : I looked at this and like the detail and degradation but as we are still novices at Maya we though about sticking to simple colours like the earlier research models i looked at earlier.

Set backs : Some models needed tweaking and the sizing for the buildings where different making us have to re-evaluate our work and alter proportion from the source images of the island but it worked out very well in the final outcome.

Camera angles shot sequences and storyboard: We used American gods as reference for styles of camera and different shots to incorporate into our video along with subtle colour schemes creating an atmosphere and mood.

The owner of the coal mines, Mitsubishi Mining Company, shut them down in 1974 due to the rise in use of petroleum. With no further reason to remain there, the residents of the island were all forced to return to the mainland and, thinking nobody would ever return, left their many possessions behind to slowly degrade under the harsh sea elements.

Despite its small size, exploring the island on my first trip was very demanding, simply because I only had a couple of hours to circle the towering structures, shoot my pictures and leave before the first patrol boats arrived. My friend and I received quite a shock when a tourist boat, evidently the early bird, passed by the island recounting the history over loudspeakers!

While filming the documentary however, we were afforded two full days and granted access to pretty much everywhere on the island. The crew was a great bunch, made up of several local filmmakers from Nagasaki, director Jim Hense (sitting below), 3D cameraman Tom Collins, fixer Noriko Uchida, myself and of course, the passionate former resident of Hashima, Doutoku Sakamoto. Sakamoto leads a noble campaign to have Gunkanjima recognised as a World Heritage Site, as well as talking about his younger years on the island and the accompanying history on the official Gunkanjima tours that depart from Nagasaki.

Needless to say, as an eager photographer and urban explorer, I was giddy with delight at both being featured in the final documentary as an amateur historian, and the chance to explore more of the nooks and crannies on the island that I had missed on my first exploration.

For now though, I leave you with these humble images. I hope over the coming years that I may again have the chance to visit this crumbling paradise and talk in more detail about its past and the people who lived there.

Great photos and awesome story. My brother is a translates Japanese in Fukuoka and sent me your story. He contributed pictures of the island which I included in a story I did on freaky, abandoned places: carlajbehr.hubpages.com/hub/FreakyabandonedPlaces

Came across some pictures of deserted cities on a local television stations website. I was curious and did a search and came across your website. The pictures you took are amazing! The whole notion of a deserted city is fascinating and a bit spooky at the same time. I thank you and your assistant for taking and sharing these images with the world. Not many people get to travel and explore so you are the eyes for us :) Take care!

Hi it me again how to get black border around the photo i cant find in at firefox for black border do i need software to make black border around the photo. I have imac computer i cant find to make black border around photo

I love the fact that it is Japan, having lived there myself I found that there was always something new and wonderful to discover from its deserts in Tottori, whirlpools in Naruto, Amasaki to this now wonderful island. Pics are amazing, I think a blog or site should be dedicated to learning more about movie film locations and its history accompanied by create photography!!

Thank you for sharing this. I saw the Bond movie but thought it was some left over island from the Balkan war. Always interesting to read about the history, and then to find out it was all made in the studio. Amazing.

Thanks for the feedback. I personally like the way ultra-wide exaggerates to give extreme perspective and power to the image, which is the sort of photograph I was looking to create. I can see how using a 35mm or 50mm would be an interesting project, however! Perhaps next time.

If you crop the wide angle photos to the field of view of a longer focal length lens, the result will be the same perspective as the longer lens albeit at less resolution. It helps to have a lot of resolution to start with such as the Nikon D800.

I should have clarified that the cropping should be outwards from the center to minimize distortion. This has been illustrated in photography books and magazines. The 36mp D800 allows quite a bit of cropping and therefore reduces the number of lenses needed to carry.
