I have a Windows machine with BitLocker. I turned off BitLocker, created a new partition, restarted the machine and entered in the Ubuntu installation interface. I get blocked on a screen with a password input and the phrase "Please unlock disk nvme0n1p3_crytp". What should I do? Is this caused by BitLocker? I had Ubuntu installed before on this machine with disk encryption enabled, but this is a new Ubuntu on a bootable USB drive.
If this is a remnant from a former installation, then you need to use a disk utility to delete the partions associated with your former installation before you attempt to reinstall Ubuntu. You can run Disks (GNOME disk utility) from installation media when you choose the "Try Ubuntu" option.
Enter the wrong password five times - the option to erase drive will pop-up - all WD software will be removed and will not bother you again. It will erase the disk - so back-up its contents first ....
What I did was to disable the WD Virtual CD Drive that has the WD Unlocker. Just right hand click on the WD Virtual CD Drive in windows explorer, click on Properties, go to Hardware, click on the WD Virtual CD Drive and Disable Device.
On a working computer, go to the EaseUS Todo Backup product page, download and install it for a 30-day free trial. Prepare a USB flash drive or a CD/DVD disc in advance, to create a bootable recovery disk as the below video demonstrates. Afterward, boot your problematic computer from the recovery disk, and start disk/partition backup.
If by chance, Windows data, system files, personal files, and other information are erased by performing the command line, refreshing, or system restoring methods, use EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard to perform hard disk recovery and get your data back! Other issues such as recovering deleted files can also be easily fixed. It's user-friendly, safe, and efficient. Feel free to download it whenever you are in need.
Attach the SSD, then open any folder on the desktop, the on the left pane of the folder, click on the SSD and it will take you directly into the SSD. From there, double click on the unlocker app, it will give you an error message, ignore it and after that you should be able to open it from the main shortcut on the desktop when you attach it next. In my case, after I went into the SSD, I clicked on the unlocker and deleted it. then went out and tried going back in through the main SSD folder on the desktop and the Unlocker worked perfectly as it should.
Hi mjaggard,
That's what I suspected. You are being prompted for the passphrase of the key.
Assuming you have the proper permissions:
- Backup your data!
- Open the Symantec Desktop Encryption client and go to PGP Disk, select the secondary disk and click "New Passphrase User" in the next screen choose "Use Windows Password" and continue the process.
If you don't have permissions, you will need to contact the Symantec Encryption Management Server (SEMS) administrator.

Hi Mat,
You will need to decrypt that disk because it has been encrypted to a PGP key which is not the same as the user records used by Bootguard.
This disk is currently visible to Windows as an external drive, that's the reason it allowed this operation.
I accidentally locked my Mac hard drive where I know the system password, but now it won't boot up. When I go to disk utility to try to change the password or unlock the drive, I see my hard drive, but when I click on the drive and go to the file menu, I don't have the option that I've seen in some solutions to this problem posted on this site (including one by Dr Mac that describes going to the command under "file" as "unlock drive name" - which doesn't seem to be an option for me) (Instead, my options are new window, new, open disk image, close, get info, and unmount (name of my hard drive)). In grey, and not available, are the options - "eject, enable journaling, change password, and turn off encryption."
I'm using external USB hard drives to backup my server (Windows Server Backup). These drives are encrypted by Bitlocker To Go. I configured the disks to get unlocked automatically, because they are swapped every Friday by an employee.
Suppose I want remove my SSD and connect it to another computer using an eSATA cable or cabinet. If the existing boot disk in this computer have a different ATA password set or no password set at all, I would of course like to enter the password at a later stage (from within Windows) to make the disk accessible.
I've actually tried using a password disabled internally mounted boot disk together with a password enabled data disk connected to the eSATA port. My HP EliteBook 8460p doesn't ask for the data disk's password at boot, and Intel's RST Application marks the drive as locked in Windows.
You need administrative privileges to use diskpart, and if you don't have them, then your batch script will fail silently. To automatically request administrative privileges, you can use visual basic in conjunction with your batch script. You can also use simple redirect to auto-create the temporary files for you and delete them when your done
Find the drive number corresponding to your flash drive. When doing it, the drive size will help you. Type select disk N (where N is the number of the disk that corresponds to the flash drive) and press Enter.
Type attributes disk clear readonly and press Enter. This will unlock the device for writing. We also recommend cleaning and formatting the drive for further use. Take the following steps only if the drive contains no important data.
BitLocker is a full-disk encryption feature included with Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. It encrypts the entire drive, including the operating system, user data, and applications. It can be used to unlock a protected drive by entering a recovery key or password. It also offers additional features such as two-factor authentication, auto-unlock, and PINs.
Disk Management is a Windows utility that allows users to manage their hard drives and other storage devices. It can be used to create, format, delete, and resize partitions on hard disks. It can also be used to assign drive letters to partitions, change the file system of a partition, and unlock a protected drive. To unlock a protected drive, right-click on the drive in Disk Management, select Change Drive Letter and Paths, and then select Remove.
The root cause of this issue is due to the usage of Windows Bitlocker encryption. Bitlocker is a whole-disk encryption used to secure user data, but requires that the Bitlocker boot agent be installed. At boot time, this boot agent is used to unlock the Windows drive before attempting to load Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10. If this agent is disabled or overwritten, either on purpose, by accident, or due to 3rd party interference such as 3rd party bootloaders or malware infecting the boot process, this error message can appear.
Usually, drives (USB sticks and hard disks) have a single partition of theirentire size. This way, you can encrypt a whole USB stick, for example. But, drives can also be split into several partitions.
The password reset disk allows you to reset your admin password from the login screen if you ever forget it. It's important to store it in a secure location you can access later if needed. Following these steps will create the reset disk so you have a way to unlock your Vista PC if you get locked out.
If you no longer have access to the original Vista install disc, you can create a Vista recovery disc from the recovery partition instead. This contains the necessary files to create the password reset disk.
Either because the file is in use or because it has denied you access, with Unlocker you can remove it. With only one right click on the file or folder, open the context menu and select the 'unlocker' wand.
