Through the courtesy of the American Society of Journalists, members of all units of the Pacific Media Workers Guild are entitled to a significant discount to what's shaping up to be a great conference: New Avenues in Journalism, to be held at SF State on Oct. 10 and 11. Here's the info from the conference coordinator; I urge freelancers and staffers who may become freelancers to attend.
Note that you must register by Sept. 23 to be eligible for the discount. If you have questions, email Laird Harrison laird_h...@yahoo.com
Regards,
Bill Snyder
Chair, Guild Freelancers.

PMWG members who register by Sept. 23 will receive a discount of $45 off each day they attend. To register with the discount for PMWG members, please visit
and enter the registration code " sf45pmwg" in the "public" field. Note that the code is case sensitive, and the discount will not appear until the payment page.

There's an also an opportunity to attend for free:

Here's how that works: take this opportunity to call up a client. It could be someone you would like to work with, or someone you have dealt with in the past. Instead of asking for an assignment, you can offer your client something: free admission to a fantastic meeting. The client spends a couple of hours chatting with writers about assignments, without obligation to hire anyone, then spends the rest of the time attending panels with first-rate thinkers in journalism innovation.

In the course of this conversation, you have made a new contact or refreshed an old one and opened the door for more assignments.

As an added incentive, we are offering free admission to the writer who brings in three or more clients.

We can only keep adding clients for a limited time, so please tell anyone who is interested to let me know right away. I can get that person set up with the Google doc we are using to track these invitations.
