I am wondering: how many here believe that the following are both true:

God is love
God is a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children
unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Him

Yes, I do ! I heard a very interesting teaching once on why God spread
the punishment of wrong-doing out over several generations. It may sound
awful to us to allow people to pay for their ancestors' sins, but it is in
fact an act of God's mercy! The wages of sin are death. If the original
wrong-doer had received just recompense for his sin, there would be no
further generations !

God bless
Liz

The way I understand "visiting inquity" on future generations is this. What
we do not only affects ourselves. It affects others, including those not
even born yet.

Yes, exactly. Here's one example of how the sins of the fathers were
visited upon future generations:

Lam 5:7-15 Our ancestors sinned; they are no more, and we bear their
iniquities. Slaves rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their
hand. We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in
the wilderness. Our skin is black as an oven from the scorching heat of
famine. Women are raped in Zion, virgins in the towns of Judah. Princes
are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders. Young men
are compelled to grind, and boys stagger under loads of wood. The old men
have left the city gate, the young men their music. The joy of our hearts
has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning.

The concept of our posterity paying, in part, for our sins is part
motivation by God to let us know that our sins not only affect ourselves,
but others. It shows the seriousness of what sin is. Many people don't
really care what happens to themselves, but their family? That's another
issue.

>Jonathan,
> I do not sense your answer was from what you really believe.

You can not sense what I really believe. You claim more power
than you have. You are wrong.

>It seemed more a cynical way of getting acrost your point,
>but what exactly is your point?

I stated the points I had to make. My statement came
directly from what I believe, and it expressed what I believe.
