Love does not keep score, If someone insults you, and you say something
like, "well, that is #439, 397 cheeks to go", that is not love, and that is
not the Christian value spoken of in scripture. I see two problems here.
First is that you are carnal, small, and petty. You and only you can create
an insult by receiving it. Second, you can not have love without
forgiveness, and if you have forgiveness, then every time someone "insults"
you it would be as if the first time. IMHO

Steven, we don't call one another names like "carnal, small, and petty"
around here and when we do the janitor mops it up. Seeing as the janitor is
feeling poorly, though, let's clean this up ourselves. I'll go get the broom
and you can hold the dustpan.

Fish,

You're privilege to moderate or close it down... I don't think any
moderator would have the ability to be fair. People have their favorites,
and their favorites would be allowed to just get away with a lil more than
those who aren't favorites would get away with. Human nature, and how I see
things. It's taken months for this group to openly correct a few posters
here who had for a long time posted things that if I had said would have
been red X'd if this group were moderated. This group has evolved BECAUSE
of the interaction and communication of people, not because of being told to
shut up or gagged.

In truth, the point of the scripture is actually, "if my brother offends me,
even 7 times in one day, must I forgive him? And Jesus said, 7 times 70."
Turning your other cheek is to our enemies. There is no limit to how often we
should turn the other cheek. Just as there is no limit to how often we should
give more than demanded of us, and pray for those who despitefully use us, and
love those who persecute us.

I appreciate it when a friend taps me on the shoulder and tells me when my
behavior is less than it should be. It's a blessing IMO. I don't have to
agree with them, can discard what they've said if I like, but good friends
don't have a problem with that so it works out okay.

You're welcome fish, but there is certainly a lot more out there.

It may not be your interpretation, but it's certainly not preposterous. I
can't
get to my books right now, but here are two online commentaries on the
verse:

"The heaping coals of fire on his head most likely refers to a "burning
conviction" that our kindness places on our enemy, or it may also refer to
the practice of lending coals from a fire to help a neighbor start their
own -
an act of kindness to be appreciated." (David Guzik Online Study Guide for
Romans)

"Heaping coals of fire on someone's head refers to the fact that people
often
carried coals in packs on their backs and were given live coals by friends.
It
was a gracious act." (Chuck Smith Online Study Guide for Romans)

It comes from a time and place where things were carried on the head. If
your fire went out you would go borrow coals to start a fire. So when it is
said in the Bible to heap coals upon the heads of your enemies, it means to
bless them more than they could imagine.

If you two would please stop quarreling for just ONE MINUTE, I would like to
interject that neither explanation is satisfactory to me, not the sharing of
coals or the shaming by opposite example. Wonder if we could dig deeper and
see if anyone else has another interpretation or some historical context for
this heaping coals example. Eh?

I think the "keeping score" was to illustrate how many
times many of us have to "turn the other cheek" to others here. Only by
seeing that one feels the need to turn the cheek can some people hopefully
see how their words affect (and many times offend) others. it's a lead-pipe
cinch that just saying so doesn't really work. it just fuels more of what
at times amounts to verbal abuse. Even when more than one brother, sister
or both speak to the problem, it is only an excuse for the person being
confronted to reject what is said and heap coals of fire on their heads
under the guise of their being misled, ignorant of the subject or the
meaning and the purpose. Oddly enough, it's usually the one who lights the
most fires who most complains about the heat.

Your math is in error.
If that were 439 there would only be 51 more
turnings.
Your citation of the scripture is also in error
it is turnings of the cheek that are counted, not
the number of cheeks.

and your count is off...I have only counted 4 before
this ...which makes it 5 ...leaving 485 turnings ( not cheeks) to go.

At which point of course we shall start
afresh...because as I am sure you know the #7 meaning a completion
multiplied by the # 70 which is a completion multiplied by 10...is an
implication of infinity.

Therefore you can keep on saying things like I am
"carnal, small and petty" as long as you wish....to infinity
I shall, of course, not counter with insults because
I would not wish to be "carnal, small and petty."

Be Happy...God loves you.
John
"Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil
speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you."Eph
4:31-32

Love does not keep score, If someone insults you,
and you say something
like, "well, that is #439, 397 cheeks to go", that
is not love, and that is
not the Christian value spoken of in scripture. I
see two problems here.
First is that you are carnal, small, and petty.
You and only you can create
an insult by receiving it. Second, you can not
have love without
forgiveness, and if you have forgiveness, then
every time someone "insults"
you it would be as if the first time. IMHO

I still hold with what i was taught that it meant. That by heaping coals of
fire upon his head one would not necessarily be shaming him. It's not a
literal pouring of coals on his head -- which would hurt physically. it's
like returning good for evil..... it reaches the inner part of the person.
yes, there might be some shame involved.... the conscience might burn a
little.

I don't think it refers to carrying coals on one's head either. coals would
more likely be carried in jars which could be hung from sticks so that the
heat would not burn either the person carrying it or the container it was
in.

Fish,

Maybe not historical, but the way I have been led to see this example. If we
pray for our enemies, then God brings conviction upon them, and this, if anyone
has come under His conviction in this circumstance, can be equated to coals of
fire. Saul was an enemy of the church, and meet this fire. Our God is a
consumning fire.

His love,
vic
