Today it was my turn to fill the pulpit for our pastor.
He was out of town with the Youth Group on a work
camp, missions trip. Filling the pulpit at our church
means putting together the non-musical segments
of our service. These include the Call to Worship,
several prayers, introductions, the children's lesson,
and of course the sermon. Our pastor has been working
on a year long series titled "From Moses to Jesus" which
tells the story of redemptive history. So, the scripture
passage was already selected for me: I Kings 17:1-7 and
Mark 12:1-12.
The last thing that I'm required to do is to stand at the
door after the service is over and shake hands with people
as they file out of the church. This is very hard for me.
When someone compliments me about the sermon, I feel
terribly awkward. I'll say "thank you" and stuff like that,
but I feel so very clumsy. In fact, I usually have a hard
time receiving compliments in general.
It ironic really. I long to hear praise, but I have the
hardest time receiving it ...

that which is not will be.
