Roy,
Why does the music always cut out.....start and stop.....and have an echo
sound? Something I'm doing wrong? Something I need to do? Really pretty
songs tho. ;o)

It's probably using too much resources. I doubt if it's anything you're doing. You might want to try to close all open programs that you're not using.

Tried that Rick. Same thing. What's the buffering mean?

Buffering is slowing down the download so that it will play on your system. If it stops frequently and has to "buffer", the download speed is too fast and Media Player is attempting to slow it down, hence the delays and skips.

Thanks Rick. That's what seems to be happening then. Assume there's
nothing I can do about it?

More RAM, and a faster CPU, is about all that can be done, as far as I know. :o(

Or if you are sneaky like me, you can download them and play them from your
HD. <vbg> That way if Roy takes one down you still have it. <s>

That is because of a slow feed to you.
This can be because of net congestion or a slow connection.
ASF files play as they down load..so on a slower connection it will
have to stop playing and wait for the stream to catch up.

Buffering is Media players attempt to stop the starting and stoping.
The default bufering time is 5 seconds. Meaning Media playing downloads 5
seconds of the data before it begions to play it. If it plays it faster than
it can download
then after a bit it will run out of data to play and need to "buffer (get
ahead)" again.

You can increase the Buffering time, this will usually help.
While a streaming file is playing..right click on the media player....
select options/advanced/change.........change the buffering time to
10 seconds...ok your way out. If you have a really slow connection increase
the buffering time
some more. More buffering means more wait before it starts to play, but
lesss stoping and starting.

Probably it's Not you. Can happen to everyone. Mostly due to Net congestion. Any interruption or slow point point on the 'net between your system and the source causes that, poor audio quality (it's not high fidelity anyway, so never can be "great" sound), and the connecting-reconnecting skipping. It's why I don't "do" asf, it doesn't work the same for everyone, depends on how good the server is it's coming from, the time of day (too much traffic), etc.... Audio quality also suffers due to format it was first saved in, 44.1khz 16bit stereo wave compared to 22khz mono wav (or worse), originally recorded as .mp3 instead of 44.1khz 16bit stereo (lossy compression artifacts and poorer frequency bandwidth from mp3, etc.) and such, makes a big difference in overall sound even when you do have a great connection all the way through.

When I had a dialup, and I NEVER could get a faster connection than 28.8,
though I had a 56K modem, with all the current driver stuff, and a 56K
connection through Prodigy on their server, and all that stuff, and I don't
live out in the country -- in a big suburb -- I still could never get the
mediaplayer to play steadily. It popped in and out. Now I finally got cable
access, and it's just AMAZING how steady it plays. It's actually worth
listening to the news, talk stations, music, etc. on it. I'm loving this!!!

I've waited two years, Sherry. They began laying fiber optics two years ago,
and the cable company at that time said it'd be ready in the fall (that was
'98). Well, out of the blue about 2 weeks ago they called and offered free
installation -- no charge for the modem or net card or the install if I had
it put in before 7-31. And the rate was acceptable. I am a happy girl!

NP, Sherry. It's just the nature of the format, nice when it works, but too many variables for it to work well for everyone. ;o)
