Hello ANNarchy enjoyers!

One question that came to me recently playing around with ANNarchy. I would like to compute the Local Field Potential (LFP) of a population.
Here is what I have tried at the moment:
  • The first approach was to compute the average value of the population membrane voltage (bad idea, that is not the LFP).
  • The second one was:
 # Compute mean firing rate in Hz on 100ms window
>> pop0.compute_firing_rate(window=100.0)
and
>> mean_fr1 = np.mean(mon_pop0.get("r"), axis=1)
That looked more like a LFP, but not sure that it is correct ...

I have also seen a nice approach to compute the Sypantic activity of a population with ANNarchy in a paper which is described and looks like the  LFP (Maith et al. (2021) A computational model-based analysis of basal ganglia pathway changes in Parkinson’s disease inferred from resting-state fMRI. European Journal of Neuroscience. 2021; 53: 2278– 2295. doi:10.1111/ejn.14868). But it was impossible for me to program it on  ANNarchy by myself.

Does anyone know how to compute the LFP of a population or have done it before?

Thank you very much community :)
Best regards,
Ángel

We would be interested too, as this is on our TODO list. In the latest version of ANNarchy, there is a monitor to record BOLD fMRI signals from a (set of) populations using various Balloon models, it is what is used in Maith et al. 2021:

Mapping spike trains into LFP signals seems to be a complex problem. Here is a paper that provide a mechanism to compute LFP signals:

It is based on kernels, so it should be possible to implement in ANNarchy, either directly or through the creation of a dedicated extension like for BOLD signals.

Thank you very much for the help, I will try to advance on the topic and let you know if I get anything!

Best
