Starting next week I would like to start highlighting some of the achievements of list members. If you pushed yourself beyond your own expectations - ran a new distance that you never imagined possible or set a new PR - shoot me an email and I will try to highlight some of those experiences in the weekly email.
A belated congrats goes out to Rick Leedy who ran the 100 miler at Umstead in a time of 23:17:32.Rick, if you have a report posted let me know and I can provide a link in next weeks mailing.
Also, I hope she doesn't mind me mentioning it but list member Nikki Seger went down to McNaughton to run the 150. She ended finishing 120 miles. No buckle, no officail finish but 120 miles is something to celebrate. 120 miles!!
Way to go Nikki and Rick. ~~~~~~~~~~
Many of you have heard me talk about The Barkley Marathons - arguably the toughest 100 mile race in the world. It has 52,900 feet of ascent/descent - compare that to Western States which has 18,040 feet of ascent and 21,970 feet of descent over the course of 100 miles. The year I ran Western States (2007) there were 270 finishers (out of 392 starters). The Barkley Marathons have had 8 finishers since the race began in 1986. Yes, 8 finishers. 8 out of 700. And that's with a 60 hour cutoff. Western States has a 30 hour cutoff.
I bring this up because earlier this month Andrew Thompson became the 8th person ever to finish this race in a time of 57:37. You can read his report here: http://team.inov-8.us/2009/04/like-water.html
Hopefully I remain sane enough that I never even think about running this race. Right now it is on my "no way in hell" list.
~~~~~~~~
Good luck to everyone running the full or half at the Trail Marathon weekend. Both races are full. I have heard from a couple of people who were planning on running and procrastinated. If you know of a way to still gain entry shoot me an email.
New Items in red.
Please let me know of any events I may have missed. Also let me know if you have suggestions/complaints, comments.
~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks to Bob who is a list member and the manager of Bivouac in Ann
Arbor members of the Ann Arbor Trail Runners now get a 15% discount
off of shoes and outdoor clothes at Bivouac.
Just let the cashier and/or the manager know that you are a member of
the Ann Arbor Trail Runners and let them know that qualifies you for a
15% discount. ~~~~~~~~~~ If you are like me the only thing you stretch is the truth every now
and then. For those of you thinking about adding more stretching into
your routine Earl Wenk from Arbor Wellness has posted a rather
comprehensive outline of stretching for runners. The stretches he
demonstrates are what is known as Active Isolated Stretching or AIS.
If you are interested you can download the brochure here: http://www.arborwellness.com/Stretching_for_Runners.pdf
This will open up a 17 page pdf file which you can print and begin to
incorporate into your workouts. If people are interested Earl is
planning on putting together a class/demonstration of the technique. I
will let you know when he sets the time/place/date. ~~~~~~~~~~
