What is Hap Lai and How to Play It?
Hap Lai is a popular card game in Vietnam that is similar to poker. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck and can be played by two to six players. The objective of the game is to have the best five-card hand at the end of the game.
The game starts with each player placing an ante (a small amount of money) into the pot. Then, the dealer shuffles the cards and deals five cards face down to each player. The players can look at their own cards but not at others'. The first betting round begins with the player to the left of the dealer. The player can either check (pass), bet (put more money into the pot), or fold (give up and lose the ante). The betting continues clockwise until all players have either folded or matched the highest bet.
After the first betting round, the dealer discards the top card of the deck and deals one card face up to the center of the table. This is called the flop. The second betting round begins with the player to the left of the dealer. The player can either check, bet, fold, or raise (increase the previous bet). The betting continues clockwise until all players have either folded or matched the highest bet.
After the second betting round, the dealer discards another card and deals one more card face up to the center of the table. This is called the turn. The third betting round begins and follows the same rules as before.
After the third betting round, the dealer discards one last card and deals one final card face up to the center of the table. This is called the river. The fourth and final betting round begins and follows the same rules as before.
After the final betting round, all remaining players reveal their cards and compare their hands. The player with the best five-card hand using any combination of their own cards and the five cards on the table wins the pot. If two or more players have the same hand, they split the pot equally.
The ranking of hands in Hap Lai is similar to poker, with some differences. Here are the possible hands from highest to lowest:
- Royal flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit
- Straight flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit
- Four of a kind: Four cards of the same rank
- Full house: Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit
- Straight: Five consecutive cards of any suit
- Three of a kind: Three cards of the same rank
- Two pair: Two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank
- One pair: Two cards of the same rank
- High card: The highest card in the hand
