Hi All,

Here is the transcript from the training session for Songhay...

[11:58:29 AM] Martin Benjamin: a couple of things we should discuss:
[11:58:58 AM] Martin Benjamin: 1) the Edit template
[11:59:05 AM] Martin Benjamin: 2) how to navigate among entries
[11:59:18 AM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i am waiting
[11:59:37 AM] Martin Benjamin: so, 1) the edit template. Can you
scroll to the entry for "access denied" and click Edit
[12:00:32 PM] Martin Benjamin: here you will see that there is an
English definition and and English comment
[12:00:56 PM] Martin Benjamin: below that is the field for you to fill
in the Songhay translation
[12:02:05 PM] Martin Benjamin: there are two fields that are
essential: translation and dfinition
[12:02:36 PM] Martin Benjamin: the translation, of course, is the
Songhay equivalent of the English term, as would be necessary in
localizing software
[12:02:54 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i see the fields
[12:03:17 PM] Martin Benjamin: the definition that you give should be
the Songhay definition of the Songhay word
[12:03:38 PM] Martin Benjamin: that is, we don't want a Songhay
translation of the Engish definition
[12:04:28 PM] Martin Benjamin: sometimes the Songhay definition will
be an exact translation of the English definition, but sometimes you
will want to write something different. The English definition is
there for guidance only, and to make sure everyone is talking about
the same thing.
[12:04:40 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: so i translate "access denied" into
songhay and give a definition in songhay of the songhay word or
phrase?
[12:04:46 PM] Martin Benjamin: exactly
[12:05:18 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i see, i did this in a glossary
exercise... think i understand
[12:05:25 PM] Martin Benjamin: then you ALSO have the option to
provide a comment, in Songhay, to help people understand the context
or the concept. This is an optional field.
[12:05:39 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: good
[12:07:00 PM] Martin Benjamin: you also have the option to change the
syntactic group, in case something is one part of speech in English
but is a different part of speech in Songhay. In Swahili, for
example, you might use a conjugated verb in a situation where English
uses an adjective.
[12:07:40 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i see, this may be practical at
times
[12:08:49 PM] Martin Benjamin: Rare, but practical
[12:09:48 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: well, choices sometimes arbitrary.
access denied as adjective, for ex?
[12:09:49 PM] Martin Benjamin: then you also have a set of tags. You
can choose to label an entry with a tag. For example, Access Denied
might be tagged "Operating System"
[12:10:01 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: ok
[12:10:25 PM] Martin Benjamin: You can use the global set of tags, or
select your own. We will work on an interface where you can localize
the tags later.
[12:10:47 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: should i highlight the tag or write
it in "Add tags"
[12:10:56 PM] Martin Benjamin: Access denied is an anomoly - it
doesn't really have a part of speech in english
[12:11:02 PM] Martin Benjamin: highlight the tag
[12:11:16 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: ok
[12:11:51 PM] Martin Benjamin: you can also select multiple tags by
holding down the shift or ctrl keys while you click in the list.
[12:12:13 PM] Martin Benjamin: when you are done with an entry, you
can submit it as fuzzy or submit it as completed.
[12:12:39 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: in mac, better control (apple key)
[12:12:49 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: it works
[12:12:49 PM] Martin Benjamin: it is impossible to submit an entry as
completed unless it has data in BOTH the translation and definition
fields
[12:13:05 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i see
[12:13:51 PM] Martin Benjamin: so you could, for example, go through
and provide a lot of translations first, submit them as fuzzy, and
then go back through and work on the definitions
[12:14:18 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i just tried with 3-d and subm. as
fuzzy
[12:15:04 PM] Martin Benjamin: hmm, did you submit a translation?
[12:16:07 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i guess i clicked on the first edit
before you directed me to "access denied"-- ignore it
[12:16:52 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: yea, should be a translation but
probably not through
[12:17:25 PM] Martin Benjamin: try submitting something again for 3-D?
[12:22:27 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: ok, tried--got message "A duplicate
entry exist (same translation and syntacitc group)." so it worked
somehow
[12:23:42 PM] Martin Benjamin: hmm, no, that shouldnt happen
[12:25:00 PM] Martin Benjamin: that is strange - I was able to submit
and view chagnes to 3-D, but I never saw changes from you
[12:26:14 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: should i try again- left field
"status" shows [empty], any clue
[12:26:50 PM] Martin Benjamin: tell me what you see in the very top
right of your screen, in the orange bar at the top?
[12:27:39 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: logn: mohomodou houssouba /
language: songhay
[12:28:28 PM] Martin Benjamin: ok, we'll have to work on this problem
later
[12:28:37 PM] Martin Benjamin: meanwhile, let's go to item 2)
navigation
[12:28:51 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: seems in order, right?
[12:29:00 PM] Martin Benjamin: what is important here is for you to be
able to find different terms
[12:29:32 PM] Martin Benjamin: for example, maybe you want all terms
that have the string "sav" in them, whether the term is completed,
fuzzy, or empty
[12:29:58 PM] Martin Benjamin: so in the box for search strng, you
type sav
[12:30:17 PM] Martin Benjamin: in the box for status, select All
[12:30:56 PM] Martin Benjamin: now you can see 7 terms - autosave,
save, save as, saving, unsaved, etc...
[12:31:18 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: that's right
[12:31:20 PM] Martin Benjamin: this can be very helpful, you can deal
with all the terms related to a single concept at the same time
[12:31:39 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i see
[12:31:56 PM] Martin Benjamin: if you translate "saved", then it is a
good moment to translate "unsaved" also - saves you a lot of mental
anguish
[12:32:29 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: good, really practical
[12:35:45 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: i got this part and moved around it
quickly
[12:36:19 PM] Martin Benjamin: nice - once you start using it, you'll
find that it makes the work very fast
[12:36:53 PM] Martin Benjamin: If you want to go back to the overall
list, you have to type * as your search string
[12:37:04 PM] Martin Benjamin: or log out and login again!
[12:41:14 PM] Mohomodou Houssouba: that works-- now i see orange notes
"Definition" and "Comment" in front of "3-D" and "abbreviation"
