My triple arthrodesis was postponed from 2/10 to 2/14/2020 due to hospital aircondition malfunction. Found out after being prepped. Surgery went mostly as planned except for fusing the calcaneous. My bone was too porous, another approach used. I developed cellulitis, needed antibiotic. Not responding well. Saw doctor today who is changing antibiotic and pain meds. My pain was out of control yesterday. If still poor response I am looking at inpatient IV antibiotics. Wish me luck.

Sorry to hear that. Good luck today at the Dr.

Do you know what the approach was regarding the calcaneous ?   I have some dead bone and
I think it's interfering with the fusion.

Hi everyone,

This might not be the thread to read if don’t like thinking about bad and questionable outcomes!

I’m almost a year postop original ankle fusion and 13 weeks second surgery for additional work to address large osteophytes and poor functional outcome.

I returned to work part time 5 1/2 months after my ankle fusion which only made my condition worse prior to second surgery. I then had a short period (less than 2 weeks)where the foot and ankle felt pretty amazing, but, after gradually  increasing my activity level, things seemed to fall apart.

The second surgery left me with a numb foot in addition to the shortened leg, sciatic pain, groin pain and a significant limp following the first. I have tried PT, hydro, cortisone injection, second opinion, expensive bracing, shoe lift and sacroiliac belt to no avail.

Yesterday, I was sitting on my sofa with my legs up and, while repositioning, noticed a  very sharp pain in my lateral ankle where I had work done during my last surgery. When I tried to stand, I could not weight-bear even slightly and I remain in that condition today having to use both crutches to get around.

I had bone grafting done in that area and I was pretty sure it failed but I’m not sure what is causing the sudden increase in pain. I have left a message for my doctor and haven’t heard back.

I’m in the process of applying for permanent disability at age 60 upon the recommendation of my caseworker for long term disability insurance. It never occurred to me I would end up in this position. It is a struggle but I’m trying to hang in there and readjust my brain to unexpected, early retirement. Still hoping to recover at some point and return to work.
Sorry if I’ve scared anyone...

Julie

Hi Julie, I'm probably no as bad as you but I had my first surgery on the 1st February 2019 for a talonavicular fusion, I had a none union and was in absolute agony maybe worse pain than before surgery, I had my second surgery in September 2019, this time my surgeon has put loads of metalwork in my foot to hold it all together, 4 months in plaster and 6 weeks in a aircast boot and this week I have finally started walking again, I have some pain in my foot but am putting this down to not having walked on the foot for over 12 months, fingers crossed with upping my daily activity it will hopefully get better and I can get back to driving and work.
Good luck to you.
Russ.

Deb,
He ended up putting the screws in through the bottom of foot/heel and used cadaver bone graft.
