After a bad fracture, my ankle arthritis is progressing rapidly.
Because I am only 40 years old, doctors suggest ankle replacement is not an option, rather I should consider fusion.

I am wondering if there are folks on this list similar to my age who can advise on what to expect.
Will I be able to run again? Dance? Walk without a limp?

Thanks, Gabor

Hi Gabor,

I had my fusion on my right ankle in 2009 at the age of 34.  I've had a very good recovery from the fusion but the following is out:
  • Running - because you can't get your gait right
I danced the whole night through at my wedding in 2013 and it went great.  I don't walk with a limp at all - Just make sure you get supportive shoes afterwards - I found the Skechers Shape ups with the rocker soles to be lifesavers.  I now wear regular flat shoes but still have my rocker soles for when I know I'm going to put a lot of strain on the foot - eg walking a lot.

I hope this helps!

Exactly same with me as Larry.  NO more running. Although if something got after me, I think I could.

 Gabor,

I had my fusion in my mid 40's... and I had been a runner before it got too painful..  Runnning is indeed out - but I Racewalk competitively now, plus i can hike, cycle, rock-climb, dance, swim.

The initial 3 months are VERY TOUGH.... but I found the fusion to be a lifesaver.

Make sure you have a REALLY good doctor ( I asked OTHER orthopedic surgeons who they would want to do surgery on them, if they had to have a fusion.  One name kept popping up, so I went with him and I had a GREAT result!)

God luck.

I have been surprised by how able I am post fusion. I snorkel a lot and I do have to kick differently on that side but I can out kick almost anyone. Running-no, not a chance. But I am pleased with the outcome.

Hi Barb,
Just wanted to say..."Phew!!!" Your post is really encouraging. I am 16 weeks post fusion, still have pain. I was and hope to be still, a very active person. Glad to see that hiking, walking, cycling , swimming still in the "do" list! I hope to be up and at 'em soon. Thanks.
