my history i had polio which affect my right leg and foot and many
orthopedic surgeries as a child. I wore a brace until I was 12. Fast
forward to present day, after many years of walking around with a
limp, foot drop, a flat foot and a food deformity, I developed severe
ankle arthritis which necessitated the triple ankle arthrodesis and
achilles lengthening. i had surgery on August 29th. I was luckily
not in a lot of pain post operatively. I had a nerve block which had
my leg numb for about a week. As the numbness wore off, I took the
cocktail of gabapentin, aspirin, extra strength tylenol as prescribed
and I never needed the narcotics.
I was put in the hard cast September 16, wore that for 9 weeks. Then
to the non-weight bearing boot around November 2. Nonweight bearing
in the boot (on crutches and using the scooter) until December 2.
Cast off and weight bearing as tolerated. I started physical therapy
November 18 while still in the boot and continue physical therapy
presently.
My doctor wasn't kidding when he said it is a long recuperative
period. Your doctor should not allow you to drive while you have the
boot on. I just started driving the beginning of January (after no
cast) I am presently walking with and without a cane with an arch
support in my right shoe. I still have some minimal pain and I am
still limited in how far I can walk without the pain getting worse.
I think the key is to remember why you are having the surgery in the
first place (which for me was to walk without pain). Though I am not
where, I thought I would be, my foot deformity is corrected, my ankle
is straight and I am definitely on the road to recovery.

I tell people at work about the up coming event and most are supportive; but there is on that says I should not do it! He says what if I break another part of my foot I will become a cripple. I try and tell him then why are people doing amazing things after completely healing? I ignore him when it comes to this procedure. I have everything I need after surgery, the pillow for elevating, the knee scooter, the bath chair, and the water proof bag when showering. Has anybody have this done on the right foot but drove with the left foot?
