I was in a cast for 11 weeks and then in boot, but my insicion did not fully close evenly. I had to not wear boot so no pressure on incision and went to wound care for 5 weeks. It healed and then went into a shoe. I am now 10 mo. post surgery and still having pain. Hang in there, this is a long term rehab and hopefully getting better.

Dennis,   I'm at 7 mos. post surgery.  Are you still having a lot of swelling?  The top of my foot swells like crazy and is so painful.  Do
you have pain when you get up to walk?

Yes still have swelling, depends on how much I am on my feet. Yes my foot still hurts when I walk. Hang in there it will get better, this is a long recovery. My doc said I am altered compared to how I was before my injury!

Thanks Dennis,  I hate that you are still suffering .  I'm just glad I am not in this alone. Dr. makes it sound like
this is unusual, which is very frustrating.  Guess we'll all power through and hopefully at some point it will
be better.  Sue

Hi everyone. I am due to get boot off my ankle fusion Wed. May 20. My surgery was Jan. 10. I am hoping for minimal pain. I plan to get high top ankle shoes. Is that a good idea to get the high tops before I see the doctor? Thanks for your ideas.

I don’t think high tops will work, seem everyone gets some swelling for a period of time!  I bought some rocker shoes on Amazon that scoop down around the toes, also got 1/2 size bigger. Fit perfect!  Also got a compression sock for swelling
, works really well!

Hello Lorraine, my podiatrist thought pre op that something with a rocker sole would be needed. However I have tried a couple of pairs since and the top of the foot was still too swollen for them to feel comfortable. A proper walking boot in a slightly bigger size is good. He has made me a fairly thin orthotic with a rocker instead and it has been brilliant so far in Mephisto trainers. I intend to go to Cheerful Soles shop in Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales when we are out of lockdown as their shoes and the fitters are superb. Excellent on line service too, they really understand the problems. I am getting much more confident walking in the day now without limping, though find if I sit or lie for long periods it quickly gets stiff and I need crutches to get going. The swelling is going to happen all year so we need patience and hope!

Thank you so much for your feedback about shoes, orthotics, compression socks. It's invaluable. I am unhappy w my surgeon. I told him how i am having alot of pain after he advised me to use only Walker ---no boot. He said go back to the boot until pain is lessened.
I think he is just trying to shut me up. Who knows? How long before no pain?

Lorraine, not wearing a boot was probably not the right thing to do, so glad you are in the boot. Hope your doctor was a foot and ankle specialist.

Yes he is and he's been doing this for 30 years.  So whether I like it or not I do what he says. I am a very discerning patient that probably asks too many questions. I did what he said and feel that I am back on track. Thanks for your opinion.
