Hi all

I might need to undergo foot and ankle surgery to correct severe over-pronation and over-suppination. The surgery will be for  both of my feet. Has anyone of you had both your feet operated on? How did you go about performing your daily activities (bathing, toileting, etc.) after surgery? I am wheelchair-bound, so it's something I have to think about.

Also, is age an issue? I'm 42 years old. Has anyone here gone through the surgery at an "older" age? Thanks!

Hi.
I hope your surgery goes well flor you.  I have not had both feet done so I can't offer much help there.  I had my right foot operated on in December 2019. I had a subtalar fusion, achilles tendon lengthening and a tendon reassignment in my foot.  It is now early June 2020 and I walk quite well.  I still get a bit of an ache at the end of the day and a bit of swelling but it is slowly improving.  I am 60 years old and am coping quite well.  These things take a fair bit of time to get over.  My surgeon told me it could take 12 months to really feel a big benefit.  I am already miles better than before surgery. I wear shoes made by a company called Hoka One One and these have been brilliant.  Great rocker sole and support for recovering patients.  Physiotherapy has also been great in getting me walking correctly again. Wish you all the best for the future.
Cheers
Brian

No I have not done both feet. I am 70yr. old and got fusion on one ankle Jan. 10 2019. Almost  5 mos. ago exactly.  It hurts when I stand after sitting and when I walk I now wear 2  elastic ankle braces that help a lot. It is better but is taking a long time to heal.

I didn't think a surgeon would operate n both feet at same time.  Didn't think it was advisable.  I had ankle fusion, Achilles' tendon lengthening   in august 2019.  In hard cast 9 week and the a walking boot. Physical therapy for 4 month.  I still have stiffness in the morning.  No swelling.  Not much pain.  It's difficult getting around on crutches.  Not sure how you would make out with both feet in a cast but I'm sure there's a way.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Was there ever a risk of infection? That's what my doctor's fearing because of my age.. but I'm only 42 and I don't even get sick much. Also, did you go to an orthopedic surgeon or to a podiatric surgeon? Thanks!

Thank you so much! As I asked the others, did you see a podiatiric surgeon or an orthopedic surgeon? I also think there should be a way for me to go about my needs with both feet operated on. Though I am wheelchair-bound, I can stand a bit when transferring to and from the bed and stuff. Would you have any suggestion on who I can approach for advice on this? Thanks!

There is always a risk for infection with any surgery.  Of course I do not know if you have underlying health issues that would make you more prone and cause your physician to have a concern.  I was 65 when I had surgery.  I had minimal pain  Did not have to take narcotics.  My pain started after I could walk on it... this is a long recuperation and everyone is different.  I can tell you even with the discomforts I am glad I did it.  My surgeon is orthopedic.

Hi,

I think there is always a risk of infection with any surgery but I did not experience that.

You are definitely not in the old age category and I have seen lots of older patents manage this type surgery really well so don’t be too worried about that.

Any reputable surgeon and hospital should have strict procedures in place to greatly reduce the risk of infection.

My work was done by an orthopaedic surgeon as it was pretty complex.

All the best

Cheers

Brian

Did you all have to use a product called hi I cleanse! I am being told to bath with it twice the night before and the day of surgery. It’s supposed to kill the bacteria on your skin but not supposed to put it on your face or private area

It's used for most surgeries. It's not bad....
but I had allergic reaction.
